Kickstarter Generates Over $377 Million

Kickstarter once dominated video game crowdfunding, helping high-profile titles secure millions in funding. New analysis of over 17,000 campaigns launched in the Video Games category since 2009 reveals that the platform's most successful era has passed. The data shows a clear shift from large fundraising spikes to smaller, more focused campaigns.

Video game projects on Kickstarter have generated $377 million across 5,526 campaigns. The average campaign raised about $68,200. These numbers reflect Kickstarter's long-standing impact on indie games, yet the data also shows that peak momentum occurred years ago.

The rise and fall of the peak funding era

The platform's strongest period came between 2012 and 2015. During 2012 and 2013 alone, Kickstarter campaigns for video games raised $98 million, representing more than a quarter of the total funds ever generated on the platform. Nineteen of the top 30 most successful campaigns in Kickstarter's history were launched during this window. The strongest single year was 2013, when video game developers secured $51 million in crowdfunding.

By comparison, the total funding raised in 2024 dropped to $25.2 million, less than half of the amount seen during peak years. The analysis indicates that while developers continue using Kickstarter at nearly the same frequency, players are contributing less money overall.

Campaign quantity remains steady while funding drops

Despite the visible decline in total funding, the volume of campaigns remains consistent. In 2015, developers launched 1,366 game campaigns, raising a combined $43.8 million. In 2024, that number barely changed, with 1,335 launches, although the total raised dropped to $25.2 million. The number of campaigns decreased by only two percent, while funding fell by forty-three percent. This suggests that competition for backer support is just as intense as in previous years, but the available funding pool has tightened significantly.

Smaller goals are driving most of the success

Large-scale campaigns have become increasingly rare. The data shows that none of the Kickstarter projects that aimed to raise $2.5 million or more reached their goal. Campaigns with smaller scopes continue to perform best, with several breakout successes demonstrating how attainable targets can lead to overperformance. Shenmue 3 raised $6.3 million with a $2 million target, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night reached $5.5 million against a $500,000 goal, and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes generated $4.5 million with the same $500,000 target.

Overall, 81.8 percent of all funding on the platform has come from campaigns with goals of $500,000 or less. Additionally, 68.1 percent of funds were raised from projects targeting less than $250,000. The data reinforces that Kickstarter remains valuable primarily for small to mid-sized projects rather than ambitious, studio-scale production plans.

Who succeeds on Kickstarter today

Geography plays an important role in Kickstarter success. Japanese developers lead with the highest success rate at 58 percent across 148 campaigns, followed by Singapore with 48 percent across 61 campaigns. Developers from the United States launch the majority of campaigns and receive the most funding overall, representing 55 percent of total launches and 67 percent of money raised. Of the 30 most funded campaigns in platform history, 23 were from U.S.-based teams, followed by four from the United Kingdom and three from Japan.

Certain periods of the year also influence results. February produces the highest success rate at 35 percent, while December is the most challenging month with only a 28 percent success rate. Across all years measured, Kickstarter maintains an average campaign success rate of 32 percent.

Publishers and the future of crowdfunding strategies

PlayWay stands out as the most consistently successful publisher using Kickstarter. The publisher launched 32 campaigns and achieved 31 successful outcomes, raising $889,000 in total. The only unsuccessful campaign occurred in 2014.

While Kickstarter remains active, the data suggests that developers are exploring alternative funding options. The emergence of new models, including web3-based funding systems, publisher partnerships, and hybrid funding approaches, may be reducing the dependency on traditional crowdfunding platforms. Kickstarter now appears to serve best as a platform for games with focused scopes, smaller budgets, and highly engaged communities, rather than large-scale production ambitions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Kickstarter still a good place to crowdfund video games?
Yes, but primarily for smaller projects. Campaigns with lower funding targets see the highest success rate and generate most of the total funding on the platform.

When was Kickstarter's "golden era" for video games?
The peak occurred between 2012 and 2015, when most of the top campaigns and highest annual funding totals were recorded.

Do large funding goals still succeed on Kickstarter?
Projects aiming for $2.5 million or more rarely succeed. Recent years show better results for targets below $1 million.

Which country performs best on Kickstarter for game campaigns?
Japan holds the highest success rate, while the United States accounts for the most total funds raised.

Is web3 affecting how games seek funding?
Yes. Some developers are exploring web3 and alternative funding routes, which may reduce overall reliance on Kickstarter.
