A PvP multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II was months in the making and weeks away from release. Then Sony stepped in.

Modder Speclizer posted to social media confirming the project is dead. The message was direct: Sony Interactive Entertainment sent a formal letter requesting the mod not be released to the public. "Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day," Speclizer wrote, before pointing followers toward an original project in the works.

Nine months of work, gone overnight

Speclizer started building the mod in January 2026. By June, 25 minutes of gameplay footage had been uploaded publicly, showing a working PvP experience built inside The Last of Us Part II on PC. The release window was set for this month. That timeline made the shutdown especially sharp, with the finish line already in sight.

Here's the thing: the mod also had a Patreon component, meaning Speclizer was accepting financial support during development. That detail almost certainly put the project on Sony's radar faster than a purely free, under-the-radar effort would have.

The wound that never healed for TLOU multiplayer fans

The timing stings for a specific reason. Naughty Dog cancelled its own official multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe back in late 2023. The studio was transparent about why: shipping and sustaining a live-service game would have consumed every available resource for years, effectively putting single-player development on hold indefinitely. So they walked away.

What got left behind was a game that, by multiple accounts, was genuinely good. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida said he had played The Last of Us Online and found it "great." The Last of Us Online director Vinit Agarwal has said former colleagues still message him to say it was "the best multiplayer game they've ever played." That kind of praise, years after a cancellation, keeps the appetite alive.

Speclizer's mod was, in a real sense, the community trying to fill that gap themselves. Sony's response makes clear the company is not ready to let that happen through unofficial channels, even when its own official version no longer exists.

What this means for the PC modding community

The Last of Us Part II arrived on PC in April 2024, and the modding scene moved quickly. Speclizer's project was one of the most ambitious attempts to extend the game's functionality beyond what Naughty Dog shipped. Its cancellation sends a clear signal to other modders working on comparable projects: Sony is watching, and monetized mods targeting core gameplay systems are not going to be tolerated.

Speclizer has already indicated the next project will be something original, which is the cleanest path forward. Building on your own IP removes the legal exposure entirely.

For players still invested in the world of The Last of Us, the strategy guides and resource collection at The Last of Us Part II guides covers the single-player experience in depth while the multiplayer question remains unanswered. Whether Sony eventually revisits the idea of an official multiplayer mode, or whether the community finds another way to scratch that itch, is still an open question. For now, Speclizer moves on, and so does everyone who spent the last nine months looking forward to this.
