Lego Donkey Kong Arcade Set Built Early Before Official Reveal

After a couple of leaks teased it into existence, the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade set is now fully official. If you've been riding the Donkey Kong Bananza hype wave this summer, this announcement lands at exactly the right moment: a 1,367-piece replica of the 1981 arcade cabinet, priced at $199.99 and set to drop on August 1, 2026.

What you're actually building

This is a set squarely aimed at adult builders (officially rated 18+), and the complexity earns that designation. The finished cabinet looks remarkably faithful to the original coin-op machine, complete with the oversized Donkey Kong logo across the top and character art on all four corners of the display panel. The screen itself recreates the game's iconic first level: Jumpman (the early Mario prototype) scrambling up girders, Lady (proto-Pauline) waiting at the top, DK hurling barrels, a flaming oil drum, and even a hammer power-up sitting on the construction site.

The set number is 72051, and at 1,367 pieces it sits comfortably in the upper range of LEGO's adult-targeted builds.

The interactive mechanics are the real story

Here's the thing: this isn't just a display piece. The barrel-release lever below the screen actually works. Pull it and one of the 21 included barrels rolls down through the level. The joystick moves Jumpman horizontally, and the jump button does exactly what you'd expect. There's also a behind-the-cabinet mechanism you construct during the build that cycles barrels from the bottom back up to the top, mimicking the loop of the original game.

That's a lot of moving parts for a LEGO set, and it suggests the design team spent serious time with the source material rather than just slapping some pixels on a brick facade.

tip
The Donkey Kong arcade game originally launched in 1981 and served as the direct precursor to the Mario franchise. Jumpman and Lady would later evolve into Mario and Pauline respectively.

Timing couldn't be better for Nintendo fans

LEGO dropping this in August isn't accidental. The Donkey Kong IP is having a genuine cultural moment right now. Nintendo's Donkey Kong Bananza has brought the franchise back into the spotlight in a major way, and this set feeds directly into that renewed enthusiasm. Collectors who picked up the game and want something physical to sit on the shelf next to the Switch are going to find this hard to resist.

The set joins a growing line of LEGO Nintendo collaborations that have covered everything from the NES console to various Mario playsets. The arcade cabinet format feels like a natural fit for the format, and the 1981 source material gives it a retro collectible appeal that goes beyond just the gaming audience.

Price and what to expect at the register

At $199.99, this sits in the same tier as other premium LEGO adult sets. The piece count of 1,367 is on the leaner side for that price bracket, but the interactive mechanics and licensed IP justify the premium for most buyers. The set goes on sale August 1, 2026 directly through the LEGO Store.

Pre-orders or early access details haven't been confirmed beyond the August 1 date, so you'll want to keep an eye on availability if demand spikes the way similar Nintendo LEGO sets have in the past.

The bigger picture for DK collectors

For anyone who's been playing through Donkey Kong Bananza and wants to go deeper into the franchise, this set is a solid companion piece. The original 1981 arcade game is where everything started, and having a playable (in LEGO terms) replica of that cabinet is a genuinely cool way to connect the franchise's roots to its current moment.
