Mewgenics is coming to Xbox, and the internet caught Microsoft's hand before anyone was ready. An Xbox store page for the tactical roguelite went live this week, briefly displaying a September 8, 2026 release date before the listing was scrubbed of its key details. The page itself is still up, just conspicuously bare.
Timing is everything here. Gamescom Opening Night Live runs tomorrow, and an official announcement from developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel during the show would explain exactly why that store page appeared when it did.
What the store page gave away
Beyond the September 8 date, the Xbox listing also surfaced an achievement list ahead of any official word. The Xbox version will include 53 achievements, a significantly leaner count compared to the 281 achievements available on Steam. That gap is worth noting for achievement hunters who care about completion percentages, though it's not unusual for console ports to consolidate lists.
This isn't the first time console versions of Mewgenics have been on the radar. McMillen had already hinted at ports for multiple platforms, and back in March he posted footage of the game running on a Nintendo Switch 2, which made that particular port a fairly open secret. The Xbox version, though, stayed quiet until this week.
Why this matters for a game that already broke records
Mewgenics launched on PC earlier this year and immediately made noise. The game turned profitable within hours of going live and became one of the fastest-selling roguelites in recent memory. Bringing it to Xbox expands that reach considerably, especially given how well the genre performs on console.
The core game is a turn-based tactical roguelite built around genetic cat breeding. Players build a squad of cats across more than 10 classes, including Fighter, Tank, and Mage, fight through over 200 enemies and bosses, and then breed survivors to pass mutations and traits down to the next generation. The campaign runs roughly 200 hours before the build experimentation starts to bottom out, and even then the breeding system keeps things moving.
For anyone jumping in fresh on Xbox, our Mewgenics beginner's guide covers the tactical combat basics and early breeding decisions that tend to trip up new players.
Gamescom ONL is the next piece
With the store page already out there and the date briefly visible, the formal announcement at Gamescom ONL tomorrow feels less like a reveal and more like a confirmation. McMillen and Glaiel have been building toward console releases since launch, and September 8 would put the Xbox version out less than two weeks from now.
No pricing has been officially stated for the Xbox version yet. The PC release launched at $19.99, so the console edition landing in a similar range would be a reasonable expectation, though nothing is confirmed until the developers say so publicly.
If you're already playing on PC and want to get more out of the game before the console version drops, the Mewgenics strategy guides cover everything from house furniture optimization to unlocking all NPC upgrades, which is where the real late-game depth lives.
