The full Chaos Cubed update for Minecraft doesn't land until June 16, but the snapshot program means you don't have to wait. The latest public test build, 26.2-snapshot-7, is live right now through the official launcher, and it packs a surprising amount of finished-feeling content for a pre-release build.
What the 26.2 snapshots actually contain
The snapshot program for this update has been running for a while, with each numbered build adding or refining features on the road to the full release. Snapshot 7, which dropped on May 12, 2026, is the most complete version yet. Earlier builds introduced the sulfur cave biome itself; this one layered in social features and a batch of new music.
Here's a breakdown of what's playable right now:
The wider Chaos Cubed package also includes cinnabar blocks and an experimental Vulkan renderer, though those are still moving toward their final state.
How the snapshot access actually works
Snapshots are a Java Edition-only feature, managed entirely through the Minecraft Launcher. The process is straightforward: open the launcher, head to the Java Edition tab, go to Installations, and enable the filter that shows snapshot releases. From there, create a new installation targeting 26.2-snapshot-7 (or whichever build is newest when you check), give it a distinct name so it doesn't get confused with your stable version, and hit Play.
The key here is keeping the snapshot as a separate installation. Your regular game and its worlds stay completely untouched, and switching back is just a matter of selecting your stable release from the Play tab.
Once you're in, the version string in the bottom-left corner of the main menu confirms which build you're running. The updated Chaos Cubed panorama on the title screen and the Friends button on the pause menu are the other obvious tells that the snapshot loaded correctly.
The friends list needs a one-time opt-in
Snapshot 7's social features work a little differently from what you might expect. The first time the Friends button appears on the title screen, a dialog prompts you to actively opt in before the list becomes functional. Presence sharing, request permissions, and the Microsoft account safety settings are all managed from the new Friends List section inside Online Options.
On the technical side, the build requires at least Java SE 25. The launcher bundles a compatible runtime automatically, so most players won't need to touch anything. If the game refuses to start, check that the snapshot installation is pointed at the launcher's supplied runtime rather than an older Java path you might have set manually.
What most players miss is that some Chaos Cubed content is still gated behind experimental toggles on the world creation screen. If a feature you've read about isn't showing up in your test world, that's the first place to check.
Five days out and already worth exploring
With the June 16 release just days away, the 26.2 snapshots are essentially a near-final preview. The sulfur caves biome feels complete enough to properly evaluate, and the peer-to-peer multiplayer is a genuinely interesting addition for players who want to play with friends without setting up a dedicated server.
For anyone who wants to get ahead of the full release, the Minecraft guides collection has coverage of the new biome and everything else Chaos Cubed is bringing to the game, including a dedicated Minecraft Sulfur Caves guide that covers the new blocks, mobs, and what to watch out for underground.
