Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – Inside the Maps and Movement of Multiplayer - XBOX Wire

The Modern Warfare 4 beta is barely off the ground and Infinity Ward has already shipped its first patch. Two new additions, two mechanical fixes, and a direct acknowledgment that some things needed work before launch. That's the kind of developer responsiveness beta players actually want to see.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare fans have been watching this beta closely, especially after the lukewarm reception to Black Ops 7. The pressure on Infinity Ward to deliver a genuine return to form is real, and the speed of this first patch suggests the studio is paying attention.

What the patch actually adds

The headline addition is Cachette, a brand-new 6v6 map that makes its debut with Modern Warfare 4. Set on the outskirts of a French rail terminal, the map uses a converted mechanics garage and an abandoned wine warehouse as its core combat spaces. It's a compact arena built for close-to-mid range gunfights, which fits the faster pace Infinity Ward has been chasing with this entry.

The second addition is a new mode called Inflation. Here's the lowdown: eliminating enemies earns you cash, and once your stack gets large enough, you become a marked high-value target. Other players can then hunt you down to steal your earnings and take the HVT tag for themselves. The loop rewards aggressive play while creating natural focal points on the map, which is exactly the kind of light structure that stops a deathmatch from feeling like pure chaos.

Footsteps and TTK get the adjustment they needed

Beyond the new content, the patch addresses two complaints that surfaced almost immediately once players got into the beta.

First: footstep volume. Players flagged that enemy footsteps were loud enough to consistently give away positions before engagements even began, which flattened the skill gap around map awareness. Infinity Ward has reduced the volume, though the exact tuning will need more playtime to evaluate properly.

Second, and more telling, is the time-to-kill adjustment. Infinity Ward's own patch notes acknowledge that TTK "isn't quite right yet" and confirm that lethality has been reduced across a number of weapons. A developer admitting mid-beta that gun damage needs work is not a small thing. It signals the studio is treating this testing period as genuine feedback collection rather than a marketing window.

The early access beta runs until August 25. The open beta, which also includes a Warzone component, opens on August 28.

Map voting has also been introduced with this patch. Infinity Ward noted the system required at least 4 maps to function properly, and Cachette's addition brings the pool to that threshold.

What this means for the open beta

The early access window closes August 25, but the more significant phase starts August 28 when the open beta goes live. That second weekend expands the available content further, adding the latest Warzone iteration alongside the multiplayer modes and the playable campaign mission already accessible this weekend.

The key here is that Infinity Ward has confirmed additional patches are planned throughout the beta's runtime. That means the TTK and footstep changes seen in this first update are likely just the beginning of a larger tuning process. Players who jump into the open beta on August 28 will be playing a noticeably different build than what launched at the start of the weekend.

For anyone planning to dig deeper into loadouts and strategies once the full game arrives, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare guides collection will be the place to start. And if you want to stay sharp across the broader shooter meta, the gaming guides hub has you covered across the genre.
