Who actually qualifies for early access
Here's the thing: this benefit is digital-only. Players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase either the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition are in. Physical pre-orders do not qualify, so if you were planning to pick up a box copy at launch, you are sitting out the early window.
The qualifying platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version is worth flagging separately since MW4 pre-orders for that platform are not live yet and will open later this year, with Digital Legends handling native Switch 2 development alongside Infinity Ward.
What you are actually playing on October 16
The campaign puts you in the boots of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier thrust into live combat when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. The setup is intentionally grounded: a routine mission collapses fast, and Park's squad gets pulled into urban warfare across collapsing cities.
Running parallel to that story is Captain Price, now operating well outside official channels. Price is hunting down a weapon capable of shifting the balance of power, and the mission pulls him into alliances and off-book operations that spiral beyond his control. The two storylines clearly converge, though Infinity Ward is keeping the specifics close to the chest for now.
The campaign promises a mix of large-scale combined-arms battles, covert operations, and cinematic set pieces. That range of mission types has been a Modern Warfare series staple since the original, and MW4 appears to be leaning into it hard.
The October 23 launch picture
For players still weighing their options before committing to a digital pre-order, the MW4 pre-order guide covering every edition and bonus breaks down the Vault Edition perks, retailer differences, and the Loyalty Discount available to returning players.
The full game launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Battle.net and Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Development is led by Infinity Ward with support from a wide roster including Beenox, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, and High Moon Studios, among others.
An Open Beta is also confirmed before launch, though specific dates have not been announced yet. More information drops are expected between now and October, so the next few weeks should fill in the remaining blanks.
