Eleven years is a long time to wait. The last mainline StarCraft game, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, landed in 2015. This weekend at BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim, Blizzard Entertainment broke the silence in a big way, announcing a completely new StarCraft game targeting a 2030 release.
Here's the thing: this isn't StarCraft III in the traditional sense. It's not an RTS. It's not a sequel that picks up where Artanis and Kerrigan left off. Blizzard is calling it an open-world, story-driven sci-fi shooter, and while the game will carry the StarCraft name, it represents a full genre pivot for the franchise.
70 years after the fall of the Swarm
The new game is set in the Koprulu Sector, 70 years after the events of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void. Blizzard describes it as taking place "decades after the events of StarCraft II," which means the universe has had time to breathe, rebuild, and presumably fracture again in new ways. The Terran, Zerg, and Protoss factions defined the original timeline, but what that world looks like seven decades later is largely uncharted territory.
Blizzard confirmed the project is led by Dan Hay, a name RTS veterans might not immediately recognize but open-world fans absolutely will. Hay directed Far Cry 5 and Far Cry New Dawn at Ubisoft before joining Blizzard. His fingerprints on this project explain a lot about the direction.
What the genre shift actually means
StarCraft built its legacy on precision, macro management, and some of the most demanding competitive play in PC gaming history. Moving to an open-world shooter is not a small step. For longtime fans who have spent years memorizing build orders and watching GSL matches, this announcement will land somewhere between exciting and unsettling.
The key here is that Blizzard isn't replacing StarCraft II or its legacy. The original 1998 game and its sequel still exist. This new title is positioned as "a brand-new game in the StarCraft universe," not a replacement or a retcon. Think of it less as StarCraft 3 and more as a new entry point into a universe that has always had rich lore sitting beneath its competitive surface.

BlizzCon 2026 and what else Blizzard dropped
The StarCraft announcement was the centrepiece of the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, the first edition of the fan festival since 2023. The event also saw Blizzard reveal World of Warcraft: Forever, an expanded version of the 2004 original launching in November, alongside news of a Diablo animated TV series currently in development at Netflix.
Blizzard is clearly in an expansive mood, pushing its biggest IPs in new directions simultaneously. StarCraft getting the open-world treatment fits a broader pattern of the studio testing genre boundaries rather than iterating on proven formulas.
The 2030 target gives the development team roughly four years to build something that can carry the weight of one of PC gaming's most storied franchises into a completely new format. Whether Dan Hay's open-world expertise translates cleanly to the Koprulu Sector is the question that'll follow this project for the next several years.
