No Disc No Buy Comments Flood Phantom Blade Zero State of Play

Sony's Phantom Blade Zero State of Play livestream was flooded with 'no disc no buy' comments on YouTube and Twitch, as a planned PlayStation boycott looms for August 23-30.

Phantom Blade Zero - PS5 Games | PlayStation (US)

Sony left comments open for its Phantom Blade Zero State of Play livestream. That turned out to be a choice.

Phantom Blade 0, the fast-paced action title from developer S-Game, was supposed to be the star of the show. Instead, both the YouTube and Twitch chats were immediately swamped with "no disc no buy" messages, drowning out any genuine discussion about the game itself. The protest was entirely predictable given the context, but Sony went ahead with live comments anyway.

The comments that buried a game reveal

"Will buy when it's available PHYSICALLY," read one comment in the stream chat. "Wow! It may look great but it will look better on a disc! So make that happen and keep happening," said another. One viewer went a different direction entirely: "Does Donnie Yen come on disc?"

None of this has anything to do with S-Game or Phantom Blade Zero itself. The game is simply the latest PlayStation title to get caught in the crossfire of a much larger fight between Sony and its own player base over the company's decision to end physical disc production for new games from January 2028 onward.

What the boycott actually looks like

The backlash has been building for months, and it now has a concrete action attached to it. The Does It Play? account on X has called for a full "PSBlackout" running from Sunday, August 23 at 7:00 PM local time through Sunday, August 30 at 7:00 PM local time. That post has been viewed over 2 million times on the platform.

The call to action goes beyond just the disc issue. The statement backing the boycott lists studio closures (including Bluepoint), a "misguided live-service strategy," the abandonment of PS VR2, and the absence of franchises like Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Sly Cooper, and Resistance as compounding grievances. Ending physical discs, the statement says, "feels like the last straw."

The boycott asks players to log out or turn off their consoles entirely for seven days, targeting Sony's platforms economically without, as the organizers put it, "minimal impact" on third-party publishers and developers.

The planned PlayStation boycott runs August 23-30. S-Game and Phantom Blade Zero have no connection to Sony's disc policy and are not the target of the protest.

Sony's position, by the numbers

Sony has already addressed the backlash directly, and its response was essentially: the data backs the decision. The company's latest financials show an 82% digital download ratio for full game software across PS4 and PS5. On top of that, only seven PlayStation games sold more than 100,000 physical units in the U.S. in 2026 so far, with just two titles crossing 10,000 physical units in the week ending July 11.

The financial logic is straightforward. For a first-party digital sale through PlayStation Store, Sony keeps 100% of the revenue. For a physical copy of the same game, roughly 30% goes to the retailer and around 5% covers manufacturing, leaving Sony with about 65%. For third-party digital sales, Sony takes a 30% cut, compared to a licensing fee of roughly 15% on physical copies.

Sony executives have acknowledged "strong views" from the community but have stated they see no negative effect on the business now or in the future and will not reverse the decision.

Industry voices piling on

Sony is not alone in the all-digital push. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick recently defended the decision not to release GTA 6 on physical media, comparing disc releases to vinyl records and arguing they "don't really make sense for the consumer" for major releases.

The UK's Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) took the opposite view, calling Sony's policy "a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice."

Analysts have been consistent on one point: Sony is unlikely to reverse course. Going all-digital increases margins at a time when console hardware costs are rising and unit sales are expected to decline.

What this means for Phantom Blade Zero

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to release on October 29, 2026 for PS5 and PC. The game itself looks genuinely promising, and S-Game has nothing to answer for here. But with the boycott kicking off just days from now and Sony's disc policy still firmly in place, expect the comment sections on any PlayStation-adjacent content to stay noisy for a while.

If you are planning to pick up the game regardless of format, the Phantom Blade Zero pre-order guide breaks down the available editions, bonuses, and PC system requirements before launch day.
