Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 Coming to Switch 2 With No Upgrade Option

The HD-2D series has been on a roll. Following the release of OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 earlier this year, Square Enix has now officially announced Switch 2 versions of the original Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2, both featuring improved visuals and performance over their Switch counterparts. The games are already available in Japan, with a western release locked in for October 1, 2026.

Pricing sits at $59.99 per game digitally, with physical copies also available (likely Game-Key Cards rather than full cartridges). If you want both, a digital bundle runs $74.99, saving you a few dollars over buying separately. Each game can also be purchased individually in physical form.

The catch that has the community fuming

Here's the thing: Square Enix has confirmed there is no upgrade path for existing Switch owners. Zero. If you already own either game on the original Switch and want the improved Switch 2 version, you are buying it again from scratch at full price. That stings enough on its own, but there is a second blow: save data from the Switch versions is completely incompatible with the Switch 2 versions. Dozens of hours of progress, gone.

The official language from Square Enix leaves no wiggle room: "There are no plans to sell an upgrade pack to upgrade the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 version. Save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions."

Player reaction has been swift and largely negative. The consensus from long-time fans is that a $10 to $15 paid upgrade would have been a reasonable ask. Paying full price for what appears to be a resolution bump and a probable 60fps target is a much harder sell, especially for RPGs where players may have already logged 60-plus hours.

important
Save data from Switch versions of both Octopath Traveler games cannot be transferred to the Switch 2 versions. Starting over is mandatory if you switch platforms.

What the improvements actually are (and what we still do not know)

Square Enix has not published detailed specs on exactly what has changed under the hood. The games are live in Japan, so comparison footage is likely to surface soon. The reasonable expectation is a resolution increase and a jump to 60fps, which both titles did not consistently hit on original Switch hardware. For a series built around its distinctive HD-2D visual style, sharper rendering could genuinely make the pixel-art layering pop in a way the original hardware could not always deliver.

That said, the original Switch versions are not broken or unplayable. Both games ran well enough to sell millions of copies combined, and the HD-2D art style ages better than most. The value proposition for returning players is thin until more specifics emerge.

Who this actually makes sense for

New players coming to the series fresh on Switch 2 are getting the best version of both games on a Nintendo platform. The HD-2D formula holds up, and if you have never touched the series, starting with the Switch 2 editions is the obvious move. The series has built serious momentum with OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0, and these two releases give newcomers a clean entry point into the full trilogy.

For veterans, the math just does not work out at $59.99 a pop with no save transfer. The games run on Switch 2 via backward compatibility anyway, so existing owners are not locked out of playing them on new hardware. They just will not get the visual and performance improvements without paying again.

The broader pattern here is worth watching. Square Enix has now made this same call on multiple Switch 2 ports, and the community frustration is accumulating. Publishers that offer discounted upgrade paths tend to generate goodwill that pays off in future releases. The ones that do not are training their most loyal customers to wait for sales.

If you are new to the series and want to get up to speed before the Switch 2 versions drop in October, the OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 guides collection covers everything from the job system to combat fundamentals to help you hit the ground running.
