Over $5 Billion Invested into Mobile Gaming

Since the beginning of 2020, more than $5 billion has been invested into mobile game studios, covering a total of 435 recorded transactions. A significant share of this investment, approximately $1.4 billion, was allocated to early-stage rounds. These 302 early-stage deals demonstrate continued interest in emerging mobile game studios despite recent market headwinds.

In contrast, late-stage rounds, including Series B and beyond, accounted for 33 transactions amounting to $2.9 billion, highlighting the value investors place on more mature companies with established user bases and performance metrics. Another 100 deals involved corporate venture funds or strategic investors, contributing $0.7 billion to the overall investment landscape.

Pandemic Boom and Post-2021 Decline

Investment activity saw a sharp increase during the pandemic-related market expansion. In 2020, there were 70 deals, which doubled to 137 by 2021. This growth period reflected both heightened user engagement with mobile games and increased investor confidence. However, since 2021, the number of deals has declined steadily and has not yet shown signs of recovery. This trend suggests a long-term adjustment in how capital is allocated across the mobile gaming sector.

Performance of Casual vs. Midcore Studios

Casual game studios have been more resilient than midcore studios in the face of recent market conditions. These studios have received more deals and higher total investment amounts, indicating stronger market positioning and broader appeal. Turkish developers have emerged as key players in this segment, accounting for 27 percent of all venture capital directed at casual mobile studios since 2020. Midcore studios, on the other hand, have seen most of their funding come from Europe and Asia, which together represent 66 percent of investments in that category. This geographic trend points to regional specialization and varying investor confidence depending on genre and market maturity.

Series A Rounds Face Structural Headwinds

Among the most affected funding stages, Series A rounds have experienced a notable slowdown. The median check size has increased, yet the number of deals has declined considerably. This change reflects a structural shift in investor behavior, with venture capital firms showing reduced appetite for risk. As a result, companies raising Series A capital are now expected to present clear, data-supported evidence of potential for rapid growth. The need for demonstrated traction has become a prerequisite in an increasingly selective funding environment.

Stability at Pre-Seed and Seed Stages

While Series A rounds have become more demanding, the early pre-seed and Seed stages have maintained consistent investment levels. The median check size in these rounds has remained unchanged over recent years, standing at approximately $2.3 million. This stability suggests that investors still see value in supporting new teams and MVP-stage products, as long as the development goals are clearly defined and achievable within modest budgets.

Increased M&A Activity in the Mobile Segment

In parallel with the more cautious approach to venture capital, the mobile gaming segment has experienced a rise in merger and acquisition activity. Over the past 12 months, five M&A deals were completed, with a combined value of $7 billion. This marks the highest level of activity since 2022. Mobile studios have played a central role in these developments, accounting for 61 percent of all M&A volume since 2020, excluding the Activision Blizzard transaction. In the first half of 2025, deals involving mobile companies made up 98 percent of total M&A value, underscoring their importance in the broader gaming ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

Investment in the mobile game industry continues to evolve, shaped by shifting investor priorities, regional dynamics, and the relative performance of different game categories. While early-stage interest remains, particularly at the pre-seed and Seed levels, Series A rounds face increasing pressure to deliver measurable growth indicators. At the same time, M&A activity is emerging as a key avenue for capital deployment, particularly in a market where investors are reassessing risk and return expectations.
