South Korean multi-platform game developer Pearl Abyss is preparing to sell its Iceland-based subsidiary, CCP Games. CCP is best known as the developer of EVE Online, a long-running sci-fi MMORPG with a dedicated global player base. Pearl Abyss has appointed a third-party underwriter to oversee the sale process. If completed, the transaction would mark the company's first major divestment since going public.

Pearl Abyss bought CCP Games in 2018 in a deal valued at up to $425 million, including performance-based earn-out payments. At the time, the acquisition looked like a smart play to expand beyond Black Desert. But CCP's attempts to branch into new genres and platforms — including VR, first-person shooters, and experimental tech — never gained real commercial momentum.

EVE Online Continues to Generate Revenues

Despite CCP's struggles with new projects, EVE Online still prints money. Revenue from the EVE IP is expected to hit around $60 million (₩85.2 billion) in 2024, helped by ongoing content drops like the recent Equinox expansion. The game holds onto its players better than most MMOs and runs on a monetization model built for the long haul.

Pearl Abyss itself remains financially stable, even as overall revenue and operating margins have slipped. The company holds roughly $87 million (₩124.8 billion) in cash and equivalents, with around $57 million (₩81.2 billion) in total debt. That leaves a net cash position of approximately $30 million (₩43.6 billion), giving it flexibility to make strategic moves like this sale.

EVE Frontier and Blockchain Strategy

EVE Frontier is a survival MMO set in the broader EVE Online universe. Players wake from stasis into a collapsed galaxy overrun by rogue AI, corrupted drones, and the gravitational chaos of supermassive black holes. Survival means scrounging resources and building a working spacecraft from salvaged tech.

One of the core mechanics is Smart Assemblies, which lets players program in-game systems like missions, trade hubs, and infrastructure. These systems connect to a player-driven economy running on Ethereum and Redstone, a layer-2 blockchain network built specifically for gaming.

Shifting Strategic Focus at Pearl Abyss

Since buying CCP Games, Pearl Abyss has been cautious with acquisitions. The only other deal it made was picking up mobile-focused Factorial Games for roughly $17.8 million (₩20 billion) in 2021. More recently, the company has poured resources into internal IPs like Crimson Desert and DokeV. This shift suggests Pearl Abyss is prioritizing in-house development over external studios, which likely explains why CCP is on the chopping block.

The sale looks like an effort to streamline operations, cut fixed costs, and focus on projects that fit the company's current direction. CCP Games may no longer align with Pearl Abyss's priorities, especially given how hard it is to launch new IPs in today's competitive gaming market.

Value of CCP Games to Potential Buyers

For potential buyers, CCP Games offers more than just an established title. The studio brings decades of experience running large-scale, persistent online web games. That kind of live-service expertise is rare, especially in the MMO space where keeping a game alive for years is the exception, not the rule.

Comparable studios have attracted serious acquisition interest recently. Jagex, the UK-based developer behind RuneScape, was acquired in 2024 by CVC Capital Partners and Haveli Investments in a deal reportedly worth over $1.1 billion. While Jagex and CCP operate different game models, both share key strengths: stable recurring revenue, loyal communities, and deep knowledge of MMO infrastructure.

Private equity funds may see CCP Games as a solid investment, given its predictable cash flow and lean structure. Strategic buyers with a background in MMO publishing — like NCSoft or other global players — could find synergies in technology, audience reach, and development capabilities.

Potential Market Impact

If the sale goes through, it would mark a significant shift in Pearl Abyss's corporate strategy and reflect broader trends in the gaming industry. What started as a diversification play beyond Black Desert has gradually lost its strategic fit. But for the right buyer, CCP Games represents a functioning live-service model with proven resilience and a development team with decades of experience managing complex digital environments.

In an era where building and maintaining successful MMOs requires massive time, capital, and technical infrastructure, acquiring CCP Games may offer a more efficient route into a challenging segment of the market. The potential deal could also reflect broader consolidation trends, including the increasing value placed on developers with strong live-service credentials and community-driven, persistent online game worlds.
