Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches November 12, with a Nintendo eShop demo arriving November 2. If Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is on your Nintendo radar, Pikmin offers another prospect: plotting efficient routes with a squad of helpers and Oatchi at your side.
Nintendo revisited the upgrade during its surprise Pikmin Day Direct, with Shigeru Miyamoto walking through its additions. The presentation also established November 1 as Pikmin Day, giving the series an annual date of its own.
Dandori Academy makes every route count
Dandori Academy turns route planning into timed challenges. You can practice before taking an exam during the Friday-through-Sunday window, when you get a single attempt to post your best time. That restriction gives preparation a purpose: the scored run is where your rehearsed strategy has to hold up.
The Direct demonstrated Gargantuan Garden, an exam built around collecting gold nuggets before the clock runs out. For players who enjoy optimizing their way through adventure games, that is the attraction here: finding a route worth practicing, then seeing whether you can execute it under pressure.
The demo gives players a sample of both the main adventure and the new mode:
- The opening area of Pikmin 4.
- Two Dandori Academy stages.
Oatchi takes orders through the microphone
The Switch 2 edition adds microphone voice commands for Oatchi, including “Rush” and “Go to work.” It also brings improved visuals, pairing the hardware upgrade with a different way to direct your dog companion.
Players who already own Pikmin 4 on the original Nintendo Switch can purchase an upgrade pack through the Nintendo eShop. The original game launched in July 2023, so existing owners have a route to the new edition without buying the full game again.
There is also a connection to Pikmin Bloom: completing exams in Pikmin 4's Switch 2 edition can earn special maps for the mobile game's upcoming Secret Caves feature. Arriving this winter, those caves let players dispatch Pikmin to battle creatures and retrieve treasure. For more strategy reading ahead of the new edition, browse the gaming guides hub.
