Marvel Releases 4th Official Look At Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom In New Art - Social

"How long do we have?" Sue Storm asks Reed Richards in the clip that kicked everything off. "Not long," he replies.

That teaser, dropped by the official Fantastic Four social account on Sunday night, was the first crack in the dam. Hours later, Marvel blew the whole thing open.

From Iron Man to the iron mask

Marvel dropped the first officially released Avengers: Doomsday trailer ahead of San Diego Comic-Con this week, and it finally does what months of industry screenings and carefully controlled teasers refused to do: put Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Victor von Doom in front of the general public.

The reveal has been a long time coming. Marvel showed footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and similar closed events earlier this year, but kept the full character reveal locked away from public release. Instead, the studio rolled out a series of short teasers, each spotlighting a different character grouping, building anticipation piece by piece.

Here's the thing: Downey spent 11 years playing Tony Stark, from 2008's Iron Man all the way through Stark's death in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Returning to the MCU as its new primary villain is a genuinely bold casting move, and the trailer makes clear that Doom is not a background threat. Three distinct universes collide around him.

Three universes, one existential threat

The official plot description frames Doomsday as a collision of realities: the main MCU, the parallel universe home to the Fantastic Four, and the universe that houses the X-Men. Kevin Feige has described the story as inspired by a well-known comic run built around universes and timelines crashing into each other, which in practical terms means Marvel gets to pull from three separate casts at once.

The X-Men contingent alone is a nostalgia overload. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn all reprise their roles from the original 20th Century Fox era. Channing Tatum, who debuted as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, is also confirmed.

From The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn carry over. The Thunderbolts* cast, now rebranded as The New Avengers, adds Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman to the mix.

tip
The film opens in theaters on December 18, making this the first major public marketing push with the full cast confirmed.

Rounding out the announced roster are Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, and newcomer Wesley Holloway in an undisclosed role.

What the trailer actually tells us

The key here is what Marvel chose to show publicly versus what it held back. The studio spent months controlling the Doom reveal, which signals they view Downey's return as the centerpiece of the entire marketing campaign. Now that the trailer is out, expect the San Diego Comic-Con panel this week to go much deeper, potentially revealing Doom's actual plan, the full scope of the multiversal collision, and whatever Wesley Holloway is doing in a mystery role.

For Marvel Rivals players already deep in the Path to Doomsday event, the timing feels deliberate. The December 18 theatrical release gives Marvel plenty of runway to keep building the hype, and if the SDCC panel delivers, this week could be the moment the whole campaign shifts into a higher gear.
