Sega Sammy Holdings has posted a 55% drop in operating income for the first nine months of its fiscal year, with the company's Rovio acquisition emerging as a major factor. Operating income fell to ¥19.8 billion ($129.3 million), while ordinary income declined 52% to ¥23.8 billion ($155.4 million). These numbers mark a steeper downturn than the previous fiscal year, which saw declines of 21% and 14%, respectively.
The mobile game developer, acquired by Sega in 2023 for $775 million, has failed to hit its original business targets. That shortfall triggered an impairment loss of roughly ¥31.3 billion ($204.1 million) on goodwill and other intangible assets. Shifts in the global mobile gaming market and intensifying competition for player acquisition have made it difficult for Rovio to gain traction.

Underperformance of Sonic Rumble
Sega's mobile party game Sonic Rumble, which launched last year after multiple delays, has similarly missed the mark. The title underperformed across key metrics, especially in attracting and keeping new players. Despite these problems, Sega's net sales for the first three quarters climbed to ¥335.2 billion ($2.2 billion), up 4% year-over-year. Adjusted EBITDA, however, collapsed 94%, dropping to ¥3.5 billion ($22.7 million) from ¥54.5 billion ($355.4 million) in the prior year.
Focus on Transmedia Growth
While mobile revenue and operating income took hits, Sega's transmedia efforts have delivered better results. Licensing revenue tied to the company's transmedia push increased compared to the same period last year. Sega remains committed to expanding its Sonic the Hedgehog film series, with two more movies already in the pipeline.
Rovio is also leaning into transmedia with The Angry Birds Movie 3, which has been bumped up from its original 2027 release to December 2026. YouTuber MrBeast has joined the cast. Sega plans to keep mining both Rovio and its own properties for revenue streams beyond mobile games.
Outlook for Sega and Rovio
Sega intends to double down on strengthening Rovio's core franchises, particularly Angry Birds, while working to increase external payment ratios for its mobile apps. The financial report highlights the difficulty of staying profitable in the cutthroat mobile gaming space, while pointing to transmedia projects as a potential way forward.
