The Sonic Generations Collection sits alongside these bundles as a reference point for how Sega packages its back catalog, and these new compilations follow a similar philosophy: bring existing titles together under one physical release. The Classic Sonic Collection and Modern Sonic Collection were first announced during Sonic's 35th Anniversary Birthday Livestream on June 23, 2026, but the exact release date only surfaced recently through retailer pre-order listings.

Six games, two boxes, one clear split
The naming here is a little misleading, so it's worth spelling out. "Classic" and "Modern" don't refer to the era the games were made, but rather the visual style and gameplay approach of the titles included.
The Classic Sonic Collection bundles three games:
- Sonic Origins (a remastered compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles)
- Sonic Mania
- Sonic Superstars
Here's the thing about Sonic Origins being in this box: it's already a compilation inside a compilation. Origins alone covers four remastered Genesis-era titles plus a collection of Game Gear games, so the Classic collection is delivering considerably more content than three titles on paper suggests.
The Modern Sonic Collection takes a different shape:
- Sonic Frontiers
- Sonic Colors: Ultimate
- Sonic Forces
Three 3D adventures spanning roughly a decade of the series, no overlap, no padding. If you missed any of these on Switch the first time around, this is the tidiest way to catch up.
The Frontiers situation you need to know about
Timing-wise, this week also saw Sega shadow-drop Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2. That is a separate product from the Frontiers copy bundled inside the Modern Collection, which is the original Switch version.
If you own a Switch 2 and want the best available version of Frontiers, the Modern Collection is not it. The Definitive Edition carries updates and additional content that the standard Switch release does not. Worth double-checking at your retailer before committing $49.99 to the bundle.
Both collections will be playable on Switch 2 through backward compatibility, but that's different from being the Switch 2 native version.
What you actually get in the box
Beyond the games themselves, each physical release includes a reversible celebratory coversheet and a commemorative patch with the 35th anniversary branding. That's the extent of the physical extras. These are straight repackages, not remasters or enhanced editions, so don't go in expecting new content, updated features, or bonus modes.
The value math is straightforward. At $49.99 for three games (or effectively seven, counting what's inside Sonic Origins), the Classic collection makes sense if you own none of them. Same logic applies to the Modern set. The key here is whether you've already got these titles in your library. Double-dipping on Frontiers or Sonic Mania specifically doesn't add anything new.
A 35th anniversary with more questions than answers
For a franchise milestone, the rollout has been notably quiet on new game announcements. Sonic Team has not announced any major new title for the 35th anniversary. The closest thing to a new release tied to the celebration is Sonic PICO PARK, an 8-player co-op indie game set for November 2026. Two repackaged collections and a collaborative indie project is a modest way to mark 35 years.
Pre-orders for both collections are live now at major US retailers. October 20 is the confirmed date across the board.
