Slay the Spire 2 entered Steam Early Access and immediately rewrote the record books, peaking at 282,314 concurrent players on its first day and claiming the title of the most-played deckbuilder in Steam history.

A Record-Breaking Launch Day

Mega Crit's follow-up to the beloved original launched on March 5, 2026, into a surprisingly crowded field of new releases. Despite competing against Bungie'sMarathon, Pokemon Pokopia, and the continued popularity of titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Arc Raiders, Slay the Spire 2 emerged as the clear winner on PC.

The game shot to the top of Steam's best-sellers list and secured the third spot on the platform's concurrent players chart for the day, trailing only two of the most dominant titles on Steam. What makes that figure even more striking is that Slay the Spire 2 attracted four times as many concurrent players as Marathon on its own launch day.

Slay the Spire 2's peak of 282,314 concurrent players was recorded in the 12 hours following its Early Access release, with player counts continuing to grow throughout that window.

Records Shattered Across the Genre

The launch didn't just top the charts for a single day. Slay the Spire 2 has now surpassed the all-time peak concurrent player counts of some of the most celebrated indie titles in recent memory, including Hades 2, Balatro, Vampire Survivors, and Mewgenics.

Here's how Slay the Spire 2 stacks up:

The only roguelike that currently sits above it in the genre's all-time concurrent rankings is Elden Ring Nightreign, making Slay the Spire 2 a close second in one of Steam's most competitive genre categories.

What's Driving the Numbers

The key here is that Slay the Spire 2 didn't just ride nostalgia. Mega Crit launched the Early Access build with a brand-new four-player co-op mode, a feature that significantly expands the game's appeal beyond solo players and likely brought in groups of friends who might have otherwise waited for a full release.

The studio has confirmed that Slay the Spire 2 will remain in Early Access for one to two years before a full launch, meaning the current build represents an early look at what's to come rather than the finished product.

Players purchasing Slay the Spire 2 now are buying into an Early Access title. Mega Crit has committed to continued development over the next one to two years before a full release.

The Bigger Picture for Roguelikes

What most players miss when looking at these numbers is what they say about the genre at large. Roguelikes are pulling in player counts that rival, and in some cases exceed, major AAA launches. A two-person indie studio producing a game that outperforms a Bungie shooter on day one is a significant data point for where player interest currently sits.

The genre's momentum shows no sign of slowing, and Slay the Spire 2 has positioned itself as one of the most significant Early Access launches in recent Steam history.
