Somnia, an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain, has launched its mainnet along with its native SOMI token. The launch comes after a six-month testnet period during which the network processed more than 10 billion transactions and engaged over 70 development partners. The blockchain has been developed by UK-based technology company Improbable in collaboration with the Somnia Foundation and is designed to provide high transaction throughput with sub-second finality.

During the testnet phase, Somnia achieved significant performance milestones. The network processed 1.9 billion transactions in a single day. A notable example of activity on the testnet was Chunked, a fully on-chain Minecraft-style game, which generated over 250 million transactions in a five-day period. The architecture of Somnia is intended to support up to one million transactions per second, providing a foundation for large-scale online experiences within web3 environments.
Ecosystem and Content Partnerships
At launch, Somnia reported having over 70 content partners. Among the projects leveraging the blockchain are Maelstrom, a PC naval strategy game, and Sparkball, a sports arena title. According to founder Paul Thomas, the mainnet and the SOMI token are intended to support a growing ecosystem of enterprises, developers, creators, and users by enabling interactive experiences that are difficult to achieve on other blockchains. Thomas emphasized that Somnia is designed to facilitate high-volume digital interactions, projecting a potential of 60 billion monthly transactions as the ecosystem expands.

Developer Support and Accelerator Programs
The Somnia Foundation is also taking steps to encourage developer engagement and ecosystem growth. The foundation has launched the $10 million Dream Catalyst accelerator program to support blockchain-based game development. In addition, it plans to host 24 online mini-hackathons over the next 12 months to provide further opportunities for developers to create and test new applications on the Somnia network.
