Japanese gaming giant Square Enix has partnered with the Polygon blockchain network to launch Symbiogenesis, a web3 project built around digital collectibles and narrative discovery. The game runs on Polygon's infrastructure, which Square Enix selected for its transaction speed, minimal gas fees, and carbon-neutral footprint.

Symbiogenesis takes place on a floating continent where players collect digital art pieces that unlock story fragments about the world and its characters. Each collectible holds information needed to progress through missions, and completing these missions earns you more pieces. The design pushes players to explore and work together rather than grind alone.

Symbiogenesis was designed from the ground up on the blockchain and aims to provide an experience focused on community building and trading. Square Enix opted to utilize Polygon's high transaction speeds, low gas fees, and user-friendliness to deliver this unique experience to Web3 fans."
Naoyuki Tamate, the producer of Symbiogenesis at Square Enix
The game includes utility items that can be traded on-chain. Players hunt for hidden objects across the virtual world, and the blockchain layer means ownership and trades happen directly between users without a central marketplace controlling everything.
We are extremely proud to collaborate with Square Enix, a highly respected gaming company with a proven track record spanning over several decades. Our latest collaboration just goes to show that Web3 is decisively getting more and more traction among the world's largest developers, proving yet again that this innovative stack of technologies and the benefits they bestow have massive potential when it comes to gaming.
Urvit Goel, the Vice President of Global Games and Platform Business Development at Polygon Labs
Square Enix emphasizes sustainability as part of the project's foundation. Polygon's carbon-neutral status and low-cost transactions make the system less resource-intensive than older blockchain models, while Ethereum's security architecture backs the game's integrity.

Square Enix built its reputation on franchises like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts. Symbiogenesis marks a departure from those traditional RPG structures, testing whether blockchain mechanics can support a story-driven game without turning into a speculative trading sim.
