Steam now lets you gift games to anyone, no friend request required

Valve has updated Steam's gifting system so you can send games to anyone via email, no Steam account or friendship required, plus new wishlist category tools.

Gifting on Steam just got a lot less awkward

You know the drill. Someone asks for a Steam game as a birthday present, and suddenly you're asking them for their username, sending a friend request, waiting for them to accept, and completely blowing the surprise before you've even bought anything. Valve has finally addressed that whole chain of friction with a meaningful update to Steam's gifting system, and the changes are more substantial than a quick quality-of-life tweak.

The headline change: you no longer need a Steam account to buy someone a game as a gift. Previously, guest checkout on Steam was limited to digital gift cards and hardware. Now it covers full game purchases too. Even better, you don't need to know the recipient's Steam username at all. A regular email address is enough, and it doesn't even have to be the one tied to their Steam account.

What actually changed in the gifting flow

Here's the lowdown on the full set of gifting updates Valve pushed out:

  • No Steam account required to purchase a gift (previously only digital gift cards and hardware allowed guest checkout)
  • Email-only gifting now works for both games and digital gift cards, even if the email isn't linked to a Steam account
  • Cross-region gifting is now supported, though you'll need the recipient's Steam account for this one since the price you pay reflects the game's cost in their region
  • Direct wishlist purchasing lets you buy a gift straight from a shared wishlist

The cross-region feature is worth flagging separately. The key here is that Steam charges you the regional price of the game for the recipient's location, not your own. That has real implications depending on where you and your recipient are based.

important
Cross-region gifting requires knowing the recipient's Steam account, since Steam needs to verify their region to apply the correct pricing.

The wishlist side of things

Alongside the gifting overhaul, Valve also dropped a separate wishlist update that pairs neatly with the new gifting tools. The standout feature is wishlist categories. You can now organize your wishlist into named groups, which means no more scrolling through 200 games trying to figure out what someone actually wants for a specific occasion.

When sharing your wishlist, you can share just a single category rather than the whole list. So if you've built out a dedicated holiday list or a "please someone buy me this" tier, you can send exactly that without exposing your full backlog of impulse-added titles. The gifting integration ties it together: once someone has your shared category link, they can purchase directly from it.

The physical gift card gap

What this update doesn't solve is the loss of physical Steam gift cards. Valve recently pulled those from retail shelves entirely, citing fraud concerns. The new email gifting flow is a reasonable digital replacement for most use cases, but there's still no clean way to hand someone a physical card to unwrap.

The workaround, if you're determined, is to gift a game to an email address you control and then share the redemption link in a physical card. It works, technically. It's also slightly chaotic in a way that might actually make the gift more memorable.

For most players, though, the new email-based flow removes the biggest barrier to gifting on Steam. No friend requests, no username hunting, no account requirements. You pick a game, enter an email, and you're done. If the recipient doesn't have a Steam account yet, they'll be prompted to create one when they redeem it.

And if you want to see what a well-organized wishlist actually looks like in practice, our Gamble With Your Friends item tier list is a good example of the kind of targeted gift shortlists these new category features were built for.
