Sunderfolk Rebuilt for PC Before Epic Games Store Launch

The team at Secret Door, part of Dreamhaven, has rebuilt Sunderfolk for PC ahead of its launch on the Epic Games Store, updating the game to allow mouse-and-keyboard play while keeping the original cooperative design intact. Sunderfolk 2.0 retains the smartphone-as-controller feature that defined the original release but adds full PC accessibility and new content, including a new hero class and additional scenarios. The rebuild reflects the studio’s focus on making tabletop-inspired role-playing games accessible to a wider audience.

From Blizzard Veteran to New Studio Founder

Chris Sigaty, who co-founded Secret Door, spent nearly 24 years at Blizzard Entertainment, working on franchises like Diablo II, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and the Warcraft series. Sigaty’s experience spans roles from tester to senior vice president, giving him insight into both game development and studio management. After leaving Blizzard, he joined former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime in establishing Dreamhaven, which houses Secret Door and Moonshot studios. The company aims to create games that focus on player connection and original experiences, providing a supportive environment for new development teams.

The Concept Behind Sunderfolk

Sunderfolk began as an experiment in blending digital gameplay with tabletop sensibilities. The original design was inspired by Sigaty’s tabletop RPG sessions and cooperative party games like the Jackbox Party Pack series, which allow players to participate using their smartphones. The concept was to recreate the social experience of sitting around a board game table while making it easier for new players to join. Players select from a variety of hero classes and complete story-driven missions together, combining elements of traditional role-playing games with a simplified, accessible interface.

Addressing Player Accessibility and Feedback

The first release of Sunderfolk was designed to make tabletop RPG experiences approachable, particularly for new or casual players. Sigaty and the team wanted to lower the barrier to entry by handling complex rules digitally, allowing players to focus on strategy and narrative. The game received positive feedback from those looking to introduce friends or family to cooperative role-playing experiences, but core RPG fans requested more traditional PC controls and gameplay options.

Sunderfolk 2.0 was developed in response to this feedback. The update replaces the phone-dependent interface with fully integrated PC controls, allowing all gameplay elements to appear on a single screen. This redesign makes the game more approachable for traditional PC RPG players while preserving the social, collaborative elements that defined the original game.

Expanded Content and Multiplayer Features

Beyond controls, Sunderfolk 2.0 introduces additional content aimed at increasing replayability. The update adds a new hero class, the Vanguard, which provides a melee tank option for players looking for a different playstyle. Two new scenarios, including a three-mission arena and a four-mission story-driven arc called Sacred Sand, expand the range of challenges available to players.

The update also improves multiplayer functionality. Previously focused on in-person play, Sunderfolk 2.0 now supports online multiplayer via the Epic Games Store, allowing players to join lobbies and complete missions together remotely. These changes were implemented with the goal of maintaining the accessibility of the original game while appealing to a broader PC audience.

Building Games Around Player Engagement

Sigaty emphasized that player feedback has been a key driver of the Sunderfolk 2.0 rebuild. The team’s approach balances the original phone-based co-op design with the preferences of PC gamers who expect direct mouse-and-keyboard controls. By responding to player needs and maintaining the core tabletop-inspired mechanics, Secret Door aims to deliver an experience that is both familiar and welcoming to new audiences.

Ultimately, the rebuild of Sunderfolk for PC demonstrates the studio’s commitment to social, cooperative gaming and to creating role-playing experiences that are accessible without sacrificing depth. Sunderfolk 2.0 is now available for purchase on the Epic Games Store.
