"Awareness is one thing; enthusiasm is another thing."

That's Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, addressing a question that investors have apparently been raising for a while now: if literally everyone on the planet has heard of Grand Theft Auto 6, why spend heavily on marketing it?

His answer is more thoughtful than you might expect from a corporate exec defending a budget line.

The investor question Zelnick had to answer

Speaking at a GameBeat Insider event, Zelnick recalled the pushback he's fielded from investors who see GTA 6 marketing spend as redundant. "Well, obviously everyone's heard of Grand Theft Auto 6. So why are you wasting money on marketing? Shouldn't you just put it out there? That is the question," he said.

Here's the thing: the numbers back up why Take-Two isn't just going to coast on name recognition. When the GTA 6: An Extended Look dropped on Netflix last month, it pulled in 31.1 million views on that platform alone within its first four days. The same video has racked up 27 million views on YouTube since publication. Those aren't discovery numbers. The overwhelming majority of those viewers already knew what GTA 6 was before they clicked play.

So what was the point? Exactly what Zelnick is describing: not introducing people to the game, but making people who already know about it actively want it right now.

What the movie business taught him

Zelnick draws directly from his background in film when explaining this philosophy. His takeaway from that era: if the product is poor, no amount of marketing will save it. But if the marketing itself is weak, it can actively turn people off something they would have otherwise bought. And if the marketing is genuinely good, it creates momentum that compounds.

"The whole goal that we always have, whether it's this upcoming launch or any other title, is to take awareness and turn it into excitement, and take the lack of awareness and turn it into awareness," he said.

The key here is that these are two separate jobs running in parallel. For GTA 6, the awareness half of that equation is essentially done. The excitement half is where all the work is happening right now.

Why this matters for what's coming next

Rockstar and Take-Two have been deliberate about pacing the rollout. Screenshots, interview reveals, the Netflix exclusive extended look, celebrity social media teases from the likes of Travis Scott , none of this is accidental. Think of it like a pressure build. Every piece of content released between now and the November launch is designed to keep the conversation alive and the anticipation climbing.

That sustained drumbeat also serves a secondary purpose: pulling in people who weren't already sold. The core GTA audience was going to buy this regardless. But there's a meaningful chunk of players who need to see enough footage, read enough impressions, and feel enough cultural momentum before they commit. Marketing reaches them.

The bigger picture for launch

With a November release window approaching, the full marketing campaign is now in gear. Pre-order data already showing the Ultimate Edition outpacing the standard version is one concrete signal that the strategy is working. You'll want to check out the GTA 6 editions guide to see exactly what separates the two and whether the premium tier is worth it for you.

Zelnick's comments are a reminder that even the most anticipated release in gaming history doesn't just sell itself. The pre-launch window is where perception gets locked in, and Take-Two clearly has no intention of leaving that to chance. With the November launch drawing closer, expect the pace of reveals, trailers, and media placements to keep accelerating. For everything confirmed so far, the GTA 6 guide collection has you covered.
