TerraMaster has launched the D8 Hybrid 2, an eight-bay storage enclosure designed to combine high-speed NVMe storage with large-capacity HDD and SSD storage. The new model supports four SATA drives alongside four M.2 NVMe SSDs, with a maximum combined capacity of up to 152TB depending on the installed drives.
The D8 Hybrid 2 is designed for users managing large media libraries, backups, video editing projects and other workflows that require both fast access and substantial storage capacity. It connects through USB 3.2 Gen 2, providing up to 10Gbps bandwidth.

Hybrid HDD and NVMe Storage
The enclosure's main feature is its hybrid storage architecture. Four SATA HDDs or SSDs can be installed alongside four M.2 NVMe SSDs, allowing users to separate high-performance workloads from larger archive storage.
With four 30TB HDDs and four 8TB NVMe SSDs, the D8 Hybrid 2 can reach a total capacity of 152TB. The enclosure also supports independent operation of its eight drives and third-party RAID software.
TerraMaster positions the system for hot and cold data tiering. Frequently accessed files can be stored on the NVMe SSDs for faster access, while less frequently used data can be kept on HDDs where larger capacities are available at a lower cost per terabyte.
Up to 1020MB/s Transfer Speeds
USB 3.2 Gen 2 provides the D8 Hybrid 2 with 10Gbps bandwidth. TerraMaster reports read speeds of up to 1020MB/s when using a single NVMe SSD.
Four HDDs can reportedly reach speeds of up to 980MB/s depending on the RAID configuration. The company says these transfer rates can help reduce loading and file-transfer times when working with large projects, including 4K and 8K video.
TerraMaster gives the example of a 5GB HD movie being transferred in around five seconds under suitable conditions.
Power Management and Cooling
The D8 Hybrid 2 introduces TerraMaster Power Management (TPM), a proprietary power-management system intended to improve energy efficiency while maintaining stable performance. The system is designed to balance power consumption during operation while providing faster drive wake-up times.
Cooling is handled by a temperature-controlled FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) fan rated for more than 50,000 hours of operation. The redesigned enclosure also improves internal airflow to help manage temperatures during heavier workloads.
Users can switch between Power Save Mode and Active Mode using the enclosure's one-touch power mode switch.
Tool-Free Drive Installation
The D8 Hybrid 2 uses TerraMaster's Push-Lock drive trays for installing HDDs and SATA SSDs without additional tools. The four M.2 NVMe SSDs can also be installed using the enclosure's side sliding cover and hand-tightened screws.
The chassis has been redesigned with a front-mounted power button, while the USB Type-C connection supports the included Type-C to Type-C cable.
NAS and Multi-System Support
The D8 Hybrid 2 is designed to operate as a direct-attached storage device without requiring additional drivers. It supports macOS, Windows and Linux, alongside a range of file systems including NTFS, APFS, EXT4, FAT32 and exFAT.
The enclosure can connect directly to computers, servers, TVs, set-top boxes and Thunderbolt devices. TerraMaster also lists compatibility with USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2 and USB 4.0, as well as Thunderbolt 3, 4 and 5.
For Windows users, the included TPC Backupper software supports incremental and differential backups. Mac users can use Apple's Time Machine functionality for system and data backups.
The D8 Hybrid 2 can also be used as a storage expansion enclosure for NAS systems. It is compatible with TerraMaster's TOS 5 and TOS 6 operating systems and can recognise configurations containing four HDDs and four SSDs for storage pools, RAID configurations and snapshots.
Additional support is listed for Windows Server, Linux, Proxmox, TrueNAS and Unraid, giving the enclosure applications across home, studio, professional and prosumer storage environments.
