A Psychological Interpretation of Dante’s Inferno

The Alighieri Circle: Dante’s Bloodline follows Gabriele Alighieri, a descendant of Dante Alighieri who has spent his life attempting to escape his family's history.

According to the game's premise, every 33 years the barrier separating the human world from Hell begins to weaken. Gabriele must return to his ancestral home and perform an ancient ritual intended to keep the gates of Hell sealed.

The journey draws heavily from The Divine Comedy, although the game takes a psychological approach to Dante's depiction of Hell rather than focusing on traditional depictions of demons and combat.

"When most people think of Dante or Dante's Inferno, they imagine something very concrete: monsters, demons, action," Creative Director Emanuele Miccianza said. "But when I read the Divine Comedy, I didn't see an action story; I saw a person going through an inner journey. That became our central idea: Hell is internal."

This concept forms the basis of Gabriele's journey, with the game using its environments, puzzles, and narrative to explore fear, guilt, trauma, and suppressed memories.

Two Realities Define Gabriele’s Journey

The Alighieri Circle: Dante’s Bloodline is built around two interconnected environments: the Villa and the Dive.

The Villa is presented as an Italian manor filled with the history of the Alighieri family. Its quiet and melancholic interiors represent the physical world and the historical burden carried by Gabriele's family.

The Dive takes a very different approach. It is a distorted reflection of infernal depths and represents Gabriele's internal psychological state.

Narrative and Creative Director Emanuele Miccianza and Art Director Giorgio Falconi previously discussed the contrast between the two locations in the game's development diary series. The Villa represents the physical body, while the Dive represents the soul and Gabriele's psychological struggle.

The visual design of the Dive reinforces this distinction. Its sterile, blinding white exterior conceals an underlying red associated with rage and guilt. The contrast between order and chaos is intended to leave players questioning where Gabriele's experiences are actually taking place.

Solving Esoteric Puzzles

Players must collect lost magical pages from The Divine Comedy and reunite them to perform the Infernal Seal ritual.

The ritual is only one part of the game's mystery, however. The Alighieri Circle: Dante’s Bloodline also features esoteric riddles that require players to examine their surroundings and interpret clues connected to the game's narrative and Dante-inspired themes.

Exploration is another key part of the experience. Hidden collectibles and diary pages provide additional information about the Alighieri bloodline and Gabriele's fragmented memories.

These discoveries gradually reveal the history of the family and the consequences associated with the ritual, giving players additional context for Gabriele's psychological journey.

Fear of Being Understood

The game's horror focuses less on conventional threats and more on psychological unease.

"We decided what kind of terror we wanted to portray: not the fear of dying, but the fear of being seen," Game Director Gaia Righelli said. "Because sometimes the most terrifying thing is someone or something that understands you completely."

This approach places Gabriele's fears and memories at the centre of the experience. Rather than relying primarily on combat or conventional horror encounters, the game uses its environments, narrative mysteries, and surreal imagery to create tension.

The result is intended to offer a modern interpretation of Dante's work, with Hell functioning as a representation of internal conflict as much as an external location.
