Today Raises $5 Million for Web3 Game with AI NPCs

In a bid to revolutionize the social simulation gaming landscape, Today has secured a significant milestone, raising a $5 Million seed funding round. Spearheaded by Sfermion and Big Brain, with participation from GSR, Collab+Currency, Lingfeng Innovation Fund, Compute Ventures, and other notable investors.

In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about the recent $5 Million raised, and what the studio plans to do with the fresh new funding to further develop its generative AI-powered intelligent NPCs (non-player characters) and no-code creator tools.

AI-Powered NPCs

Today sets itself apart by leveraging generative AI-powered intelligent NPCs (non-player characters), aiming to redefine player immersion through realistic and dynamic interactions. Unlike traditional social simulation games, where NPC interactions often feel scripted and shallow, Today's Residents utilize advanced AI to mirror genuine human-like conversations.

Moreover, Today plans to leverage emergent interactions with Residents to enhance its storytelling. With a focus on crafting emotionally resonant experiences, the game promises unique narratives that evolve alongside players' choices and actions.

Michael O'Connor, co-founder of Today, expressed the team's dedication to transforming player expectations, stating, "We're transforming expectations by replicating the nuances of real-life dynamics using advanced AI that gives our NPCs unparalleled depth and responsiveness."

Web3 and No-Code Tech

In addition to its innovative NPC system, Today aims to pioneer the integration of web3 and no-code technology within the social simulation genre. By empowering players with no-code creator tools, the game seeks to foster creativity and ownership, allowing players to build their own islands and in-game assets.

Furthermore, Today plans to utilize NFTs to deliver exclusive content to its community. Through the issuance of Seed NFTs, players will gain access to unique worlds, shape the traits of Residents, and unlock exclusive in-game content. This approach aims to offer players a sense of ownership and exclusivity within the game.

Benjamin Cleary, co-founder and creative director of Today, emphasized the centrality of storytelling in the game's design, stating, "Our story-first approach fosters genuine emotional connections with the characters in our game."

Final Thoughts

Sam Kim, General Partner at Big Brain, highlighted the transformative potential of Today's approach, stating, "As the gaming industry continues to mature, incorporating elements of crypto and AI, the realism and immersion will completely transform how users engage and interact."

With an alpha launch slated for early 2025 and periodic playtests scheduled through its Discord community, Today is poised to redefine the social simulation gaming landscape. Through its innovative blend of AI, web3 technology, and immersive storytelling, the game aims to offer players a truly unique and engaging experience.
