Ubisoft games are now live in the program for Xbox Insider testers in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings. Titles like Far Cry Primal, Far Cry 4, Trials Fusion (with season pass), the Assassin's Creed Ezio Collection, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and more are all converting successfully. What the disc-to-digital program actually does
Here's the thing: the program is still in Alpha testing, so the initial roster of supported games was never going to represent the final state of things. Microsoft has been clear that the rollout is ongoing, and publishers need to work through licensing agreements before their titles go live. That's not a quick process for any large organization.
When a compatible disc is inserted into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X, the program attaches a digital license to your account. From that point you can download, stream via cloud, and access Xbox Play Anywhere support, all without needing the disc in the drive. You can also share that license with another player through console sharing.
The disc itself doesn't become worthless either. If you sell or give it away, the next person can claim the digital license from your account. Cloud saves carry over too, so re-acquiring a title digitally later on picks up right where you left off.
Why the Ubisoft narrative caught fire so fast
Ubisoft has a complicated history with game preservation. The shutdown of The Crew and the broader conversation around digital ownership of games the publisher has delisted made the "Ubisoft won't support disc-to-digital" story feel plausible. The program already has well over 1,000 games in its supported list and that number has been climbing since the alpha launched.
The broader context matters too. With PlayStation publicly committed to phasing out physical discs entirely by 2028, Xbox's approach of bridging physical and digital ownership looks increasingly distinct. Whether the next-gen Xbox Helix continues that commitment will be worth watching closely.
