Watch Dogs 2': Inside Game Daring to Take on San Francisco Tech Boom

Nine-year-old games don't usually trend. Watch Dogs 2 is trending.

Ubisoft's open-world hacker adventure launched back in November 2016, spent years as one of those games people always meant to play but never got around to, and is now sitting at over 16,000 concurrent players on Steam. The reason is almost comically simple: the base game is $2.50.

From $50 to pocket change

The current Steam sale runs until July 9 and cuts the standard price by 95%. At $2.50 for the base game, it's hard to argue with the math. The Deluxe Edition, which adds new cars, co-op missions, outfits, and weapons, is $3. The Gold Edition, which bundles in everything including world missions and additional story content, comes in at $4.

For context, a single cup of coffee costs more than the Gold Edition right now.

The player response has been immediate. SteamDB data shows Watch Dogs 2 crossing 10,000 concurrent players with a 24-hour peak above 16,000. The game's all-time concurrent high sits at 18,138, and it's within striking distance. That's a number most live-service games would envy, let alone a single-player title that launched when the PS4 Pro was brand new.

Why this game resonates right now

Here's the thing: the timing isn't just about price. Watch Dogs 2 puts you in the shoes of Marcus Holloway, an Oakland native who gets racially profiled and wrongfully accused of a high-tech crime by an AI-driven predictive system. He joins DedSec, a hacker collective modeled loosely on Anonymous, and spends the game dismantling the tech billionaires and surveillance infrastructure running a fictionalized San Francisco Bay Area.

That premise lands differently in 2026 than it did in 2016. AI-powered surveillance systems, smart home devices feeding data to interconnected networks, and real debates around digital privacy have given the game's fiction an uncomfortable amount of real-world texture. Players aren't just buying a cheap open-world game. They're buying a power fantasy about hacking back against systems that feel increasingly familiar.

Marcus himself is a big part of why the game holds up. He's genuinely fun to play as, with a personality that makes the story's lighter moments land without undermining the heavier ones. The DedSec crew around him is equally well-written, which is rarer than it should be in open-world games of this era.

What you actually get for $2.50

The base game covers the full main story, the open-world sandbox, and all the core hacking mechanics that made Watch Dogs 2 stand apart from its predecessor. The mix of stealth and aggressive play styles gives you genuine flexibility, and the co-op integration means you can bring a friend into your session without loading into a separate mode.

What most players miss on a first run is how much the side content rewards exploration. The world missions and optional hacking challenges flesh out the DedSec lore in ways the main story doesn't always have time for. If you're going Gold Edition for $4, those are included.

tip
The Gold Edition at $4 includes all DLC content and co-op missions. At that price, there's no real reason to grab anything less if you're buying in.

A nine-year-old game still finding new players

The Watch Dogs 2 surge is a good reminder that great games don't expire. They just wait for the right moment. A 95% discount on a polished open-world game with a strong narrative and multiplayer hooks is exactly the kind of moment that converts years of "I'll get to it eventually" into actual playtime.

The sale runs through July 9. If you've been sitting on this one, the window is short. Check out our game reviews if you want to see how other titles in the genre stack up before you commit your next few evenings to hacking San Francisco.
