Munich-based indie studio Welevel has closed a $5.7 million funding round to advance its AI-powered game development technology. Bitkraft Ventures led the investment, with additional backing from BMWK (DLR), goodwater, and several industry executives. The capital will fund team expansion and further development of the studio's AI tools, which aim to accelerate production timelines and enable more responsive, player-driven game worlds.

CEO Christian Heimerl says the studio's mission is to let smaller teams compete with major publishers by using AI to handle time-intensive development tasks while preserving creative control. Welevel's technology focuses on procedural world-building, adaptive NPC behavior, and dynamic quest systems that react to player decisions in real time.

About Welevel

The fresh capital will let Welevel double its headcount as it pushes toward early access for its debut project: a sandbox survival game in development since 2021. The title runs on proprietary generative models and is slated to launch in early access next year. Welevel positions the game as a rethink of survival mechanics, featuring NPCs that retain memory of player actions, participate in resource gathering, and help shape the evolving settlement.

Bitkraft partner Jasper Brand points to Welevel's AI pipeline as a way to iterate faster and produce more efficiently than traditional workflows allow. Heimerl argues that while big-budget productions typically demand massive teams and budgets, Welevel's approach lets a lean studio deliver the kind of depth and polish usually reserved for triple-A releases.

Player experience and AI innovation

Heimerl founded Welevel out of a lifelong obsession with gaming rather than a monetization strategy. Influenced heavily by Ultima Online, he saw procedural generation and AI as tools to deepen immersion rather than just cut costs. His background in AI companies gave him the technical foundation to build systems that generate content on the fly and adapt to how players interact with the world.

The studio's AI handles narrative branching, procedural terrain generation, and NPC decision-making. Heimerl notes that many survival games devolve into repetitive resource loops that wear thin after a few hours. Welevel's NPCs are designed to take over some of that busywork, keeping player-built towns active and responsive even when the player steps away.

Future plans and industry recognition

Welevel plans to branch into other genres and eventually support user-generated content. The studio will demo its tech at GDC 2025, showcasing how its AI tools handle procedural generation and real-time world adaptation.

Bitkraft Ventures manages over $1 billion in assets and focuses on early-stage investments across gaming, web3, blockchain, and immersive tech. Brand says Welevel's approach breaks down traditional cost and scale barriers, letting small teams punch above their weight.

With funding in hand, Welevel is refining its debut game, stress-testing its AI systems, and preparing for early access. The studio's model represents a different way of thinking about how games can be developed.
