Xbox classics come to PC, Microsoft unveils new Backward Compatibility program - Neowin

Four original Xbox games just landed on PC for the first time ever. Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC launched today in early release, and it is exactly what it sounds like: classic Xbox titles, now playable on Windows 11 PCs and handheld devices like the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, no console required.

The four games you can play right now

The launch lineup is small but loaded with nostalgia for anyone who was gaming in the original Xbox era. The four titles available starting today are:

  • BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
  • Conker: Live and Reloaded
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Fuzion Frenzy

All four are available for purchase through the Xbox on PC app and are included across all Xbox Game Pass plans. Here's the key detail for anyone who already owns these digitally: if you have a console license for any of these games, that license carries over to PC automatically. No repurchasing required.

Through Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, these titles are now accessible on console, cloud, PC, and handheld in one unified library.

What PC actually gets that console didn't

This isn't just a straight port. Xbox has added a suite of PC-specific graphics options that go beyond what the original hardware ever offered. Players get up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync support, fullscreen and windowed display modes, anisotropic filtering, and enhanced anti-aliasing. Customizable language and audio settings are in there too.

important
Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC requires Windows 11. The minimum GPU spec is an Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Intel Arc A310, with at least 8GB of RAM and a 4-core CPU (Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 minimum). For a smoother experience, the recommended setup jumps to a Radeon RX 6800, Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti, or Intel Arc A770 with a 6-core CPU and 8GB of GPU VRAM.

The recommended spec list is worth paying attention to if you plan to push the resolution upscaling. Running Crimson Skies at 4x upscale on a GTX 950 is technically possible but not where you want to be.

Achievements are coming, just not today

Here's the thing most players will want to know: Achievements are not live at launch. Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation at Xbox, confirmed that Achievements are coming to select original Xbox games on both console and PC later this year, and the four launch titles will be updated to include them in the coming months.

For Achievement hunters, that means these games are worth revisiting once that update drops. For everyone else, the games are fully playable right now without them.

This early release is framed as the beginning of a broader preservation effort. Xbox has been clear that more classic titles will be added over time, though no specific games or timelines beyond today's four have been confirmed yet.

What this means for PC players going forward

The practical upside here extends beyond nostalgia. If you own a handheld like the ROG Xbox Ally and have been building a digital Xbox library on console, your existing licenses now travel with you to PC. That is a meaningful shift for anyone who plays across multiple devices.

For players curious about which Xbox titles support cross-platform features, check out the crossplay and cross-platform progression guide for Halo: Campaign Evolved as an example of how Xbox is handling multi-platform play across its current lineup. And if you're tracking other upcoming Xbox and PC releases, the Replaced release date and start times guide has the details on one of the more anticipated Xbox titles still on the horizon.

Four games is a modest start, but the infrastructure is now in place. Keep an eye on the gaming guides hub as more backward compatible titles get confirmed and the Achievements update rolls out later this year.
