Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has confirmed the exact prices for the upcoming Xbox Cloud Gaming playtime packs, and the shift from unlimited streaming to a tiered, pay-as-you-go model is now fully locked in for November.

What unlimited cloud gaming used to look like

For years, Xbox Cloud Gaming (XCloud) was a straight perk bundled into every Game Pass subscription. Pay for the service, stream whatever you want, for as long as you want. No clocks, no caps, no extra fees. That era ends next month.

Starting in November, monthly cloud gaming hours will be capped based on your Game Pass tier. Ultimate subscribers get 15 hours per month, Premium subscribers get 10 hours, and Essential subscribers get just 5 hours. Once those hours run out, you either stop streaming or you open your wallet.

The three playtime packs and what they actually cost

Xbox has priced the top-up packs across three tiers:

PackHoursPrice
Starter10 hours$3.99
Standard25 hours$7.99
Extended50 hours$11.99

The 25-hour Standard pack is worth flagging specifically: it gives you more streaming time than any Game Pass subscription tier provides on its own. For players who primarily use cloud gaming rather than local installs, the math on that pack versus the monthly allotment becomes relevant fast.

These packs are also available to non-subscribers. Someone without any Game Pass plan can buy playtime outright, though they would be streaming without the subscription's game library behind it.

Ads are coming too, just not for everyone yet

Here's the thing: paid packs are only part of the picture. Xbox has been developing technology to insert ads into cloud gaming sessions at natural break points, like load screens and pauses. The long-term plan is a free, ad-supported tier of Xbox Cloud Gaming for all players. Right now, that option is limited to Xbox Insiders testing the feature.

So the full model, once it rolls out completely, looks something like this: free streaming with ads, capped hours with a subscription, or ad-free extended hours via paid packs. It is a significant structural change from the single-tier unlimited model that existed before.

This all sits within a broader reset at Xbox. Nearly 2,000 employees have been laid off, with further cuts expected through January. Services restructuring, including these cloud gaming changes, is part of the same wider effort to reshape how the platform operates.

For players planning around the new limits, the Gears of War: E-Day Game Pass availability guide breaks down exactly which tiers get access to one of Xbox's biggest recent releases, which is useful context as tier differences start to matter more. If you want a broader look at how Xbox titles are being priced and packaged right now, the Gears of War: E-Day pre-order guide covers every edition and bonus in detail.

The November rollout is the date to watch. Players who stream heavily through Game Pass will want to calculate how quickly they burn through their tier's monthly hours before that first cap hits.
