Here's how it unfolded. On June 8, the official Xbox Podcast published a deep-dive video on Gears of War: E-Day following its reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Somewhere inside that video was a version of the game's release art that most people were never supposed to see: the same key art shown during the showcase, but with a PS5 logo sitting right alongside the Xbox Series X|S and PC platform icons, next to an October 6, 2026 release date.
Microsoft moved fast to scrub the video from both its YouTube channel and official Xbox news page, but not fast enough. The internet had already grabbed it. Screenshots spread across ResetEra and Reddit within minutes, and the speculation machine kicked into overdrive.

What Xbox is actually saying
Xbox vice president of games marketing Aaron Greenberg stepped in to address the situation directly, posting a statement on X. His message was short and pointed: the rumors that Microsoft had pulled Gears of War: E-Day from PS5 at the last minute are not true.
"I can confirm this is not true," Greenberg wrote. "We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group. Intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching showcase."
He followed up with context about the speed of change inside Xbox right now. "A lot has changed since Asha came into role 107 days ago. We are moving fast and it's frankly pretty energizing inside the hallways here. I was made aware of these exclusives roughly a month in advance."
That's a notable detail. If Greenberg himself only learned about the exclusivity call roughly a month out, the circle of people who knew was genuinely small.
Greenberg's statement pushes back on the last-minute pull narrative, but does not directly address what the PS5 logo was doing in the official art in the first place.
The trail of leaks that built up to this
This wasn't the first signal pointing toward a PS5 version. On June 6, Walmart accidentally published a PS5 placeholder listing for Gears of War: E-Day ahead of the showcase, which had plenty of people convinced a multiplatform announcement was coming. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma put that to rest during the showcase itself, confirming the game as an Xbox console exclusive.
The confirmed platforms are Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft has also stated clearly that this is not a timed exclusive, meaning there are no current plans to ever bring the game to PS5.
The key here is that the leaked art and the Walmart listing together paint a picture of a game that, at some point in development, had PS5 in its orbit. Whether that was a placeholder, an early plan, or something more concrete is something Microsoft has not addressed.
Where E-Day fits in the franchise right now
Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set during the original Emergence Day, the moment the Locust first surfaced and tore civilization apart. It was first announced back in 2024 and has been building momentum ever since. The gameplay reveal at this year's showcase impressed, and a multiplayer beta is already scheduled for August 6.
For PS5 players who want a taste of the franchise while E-Day stays on Xbox, Gears of War: Reloaded is available on PS5. That ground-up remaster of the original game launched in August 2025 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, so PlayStation fans aren't completely locked out of the series.
Gears of War: E-Day slots into a broader shooter games lineup that Microsoft is clearly betting on to drive Xbox hardware and Game Pass engagement heading into the holiday season. With an October 6 release date locked in and a beta less than two months out, the conversation is about to shift from platform politics back to chainsaw rifles and Locust hordes where it belongs.
If you're planning to jump in on Xbox or PC, the Gears of War: Reloaded guides are worth a look to get up to speed on the story before E-Day drops in October.
