Xbox Is Helping Rockstar Protect GTA 6 IP After Leaks

GTA 6 PC Port Coming Sooner Than Expected, Corsair Believes

First came the footage. Then the map. Then an alleged countdown to more drops. Over the past week, an entity calling itself CYBERLEEK has been releasing what appears to be genuine Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay material, sending shockwaves through the gaming community and causing Take-Two Interactive's market value to drop by roughly $2 billion. Now Xbox has formally entered the conversation.

Scott Van Vliet, Chief Technology Officer at Xbox, posted on X confirming that Microsoft is actively working alongside Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games to help protect their creative work. His statement was direct: “We are working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar Games to support efforts to protect creative works and intellectual property.”

What Van Vliet's statement actually signals

Here's the thing: Van Vliet did not name GTA 6 directly in his post. But the timing makes the context obvious. The CYBERLEEK situation has been escalating daily, and Rockstar has not yet publicly identified who is behind the leaks. Despite that, the studio has reportedly made clear internally that the situation is being treated with urgency, and its marketing plans have not changed.

For Xbox to step in publicly is notable. Microsoft's relationship with Rockstar is not a publishing one, but as a platform holder, Xbox has real tools at its disposal when it comes to protecting IP on its ecosystem. Van Vliet was also the person who addressed Xbox's major service outage in July, so this is someone who speaks up when the situation calls for it, not just for PR.

The key here is that this is a multi-company response forming around what looks like a serious security breach. Rockstar is not handling this alone.

The Netflix preview is still happening

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, had already gone on record defending the decision to give Netflix a limited exclusivity window for an extended GTA 6 preview. That preview is scheduled for next week, and nothing about the CYBERLEEK situation has changed those plans. Zelnick's position is that once people actually see the content Netflix will air, the reaction will be positive.

That is a confident stance given the circumstances. The leaks have already put a significant amount of footage and map detail into the public domain, and Rockstar still has not identified the source. But the studio's refusal to blink on its reveal timeline suggests it believes the official content will land differently than grainy leak footage.

important
The CYBERLEEK leaks have not caused Rockstar or Take-Two to delay or alter any official GTA 6 marketing events, including the upcoming Netflix preview.

What this means for players watching the situation

For anyone following GTA 6 closely, the practical takeaway is straightforward. The official reveal pipeline is intact. What you have seen from CYBERLEEK is unverified, potentially incomplete, and almost certainly not representative of the final product. Leaked builds of games in development can look drastically different from launch versions, and GTA 6 is a game that has been in production for years.

The Xbox involvement also suggests that platform-level enforcement tools may now be part of how Rockstar and Take-Two are pursuing the situation. That could mean anything from DMCA takedowns to more technical measures depending on how the leak originated.

If you want to stay ahead of what is actually confirmed about the game, the GTA 6 pre-order guide covers everything officially announced about platforms and purchase options. The next few days, with the Netflix preview approaching, should bring a lot more clarity on what Rockstar actually wants you to see.
