Introduction

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is the puzzle-platformer that proved you don't need weapons to make a great action game. Playing as Abe, a weaponless Mudokon slave who stumbles onto a corporate conspiracy involving his own species, every screen is a stealth puzzle wrapped in dark comedy. The game that launched one of gaming's strangest and most beloved franchises still holds up as one of the sharpest platformers ever made.

Overview

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee drops players into a grim industrial world where the hero can't fight back. Abe is a Mudokon floor-waxer at RuptureFarms, the biggest meat-processing plant on Oddworld, who overhears his corporate Glukkon bosses planning to turn his own enslaved species into a new product line. Spotted and hunted, Abe has one goal: escape and rescue as many fellow Mudokons as possible before the factory grinds them all up.

The game was originally developed and published by Oddworld Inhabitants, first releasing in 1997 before arriving on Steam in 2008. What made it stand out then, and still does now, is its commitment to a specific design philosophy: Abe is deliberately underpowered, and the game never apologizes for that. Every encounter is a problem to solve rather than a fight to win.

Gameplay and mechanics

Abe's core toolkit is built around movement and misdirection rather than combat. The key mechanics include:

  • Chanting to stun or possess enemies
  • Throwing stones to distract guards
  • Sneaking, tiptoeing, and rolling past hazards
  • Riding Elum, a large pack animal, through specific stages
  • GameSpeak commands to direct rescued Mudokons

Possession is the standout mechanic. Chanting long enough lets Abe take over a Slig guard, giving access to that Slig's machine gun, radio communications with other guards, and the ability to detonate the possessed body to clear a path. It sounds absurd, and it is, but it's also genuinely clever puzzle design. Every enemy type has different abilities when possessed, which means learning what each one can do becomes part of the game's core loop.

The GameSpeak system adds another layer. Abe can call to nearby Mudokon slaves using a small set of spoken commands, guiding them to exits or out of harm's way. Saving all 99 Mudokons scattered across the game unlocks the good ending, making rescue an active mechanical priority rather than a side objective.

World and setting

Oddworld is one of gaming's most distinctive fictional universes. RuptureFarms is a place of rusted pipes, flickering neon, and corporate propaganda posters, a world that looks like an industrial nightmare run by creatures who are equal parts ridiculous and menacing. The Glukkons wear suits and bark orders from boardrooms. The Sligs wear mechanical pants and shoot first. The Mudokons, meanwhile, are passive, trusting, and completely dependent on Abe doing the right thing.

The pre-rendered backgrounds give each area a specific visual weight that flat sprite art couldn't match at the time. CG cutscenes bookend levels with story beats that are darkly funny and genuinely grim in equal measure. The satirical angle, corporate exploitation played straight as horror, gives the game a thematic edge that most platformers of its era didn't bother with.

Impact and legacy

Abe's Oddysee sits at the foundation of a franchise that has since expanded across multiple sequels and a full HD remake in Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty. The original game's influence on puzzle-platformer design is clear: it made environmental stealth and enemy possession mechanics central to the genre conversation years before those ideas became common. The difficulty is real and uncompromising, the kind that expects failure as part of learning each screen's logic. That design choice is exactly what gives every successful rescue run its payoff.
