Phantom Blade Zero arrives with four difficulty settings, a director-estimated runtime of 25 to 30 hours, and a Platinum trophy list that does not require you to suffer through the hardest mode. Whether you want kung fu cinema or a Sekiro-style punishment run, the game has a lane for you. Here is the short answer and everything underneath it.

What are the four difficulty modes in Phantom Blade Zero?

S-GAME built a proper ladder rather than the usual easy-normal-hard slider. Each step changes how enemies behave, not just how much damage they deal.

ModeBest forWhat actually changes
WayfarerStory players, newcomers to action gamesLess aggressive AI, easier stance breaks, more execution animations
PathbreakerMost first-time playersThe standard balanced challenge the game is designed around
HellwalkerSoulslike veterans, players who finished Sekiro or NiohTop-tier adaptive AI, new boss skills and attack patterns
66 DaysChallenge runners after a full clearHellwalker AI plus a hard cap of 66 total deaths per run

The PlayStation Blog names Wayfarer, Hellwalker, and 66 Days directly. Pathbreaker was shown in the August 17 State of Play presentation and sits between Wayfarer and Hellwalker on the ladder.

How hard is Wayfarer, and does it gut the boss fights?

No. Director Soulframe Liang said the gap between Wayfarer and Hellwalker is mostly behavioral, not numerical. Health and damage shift a little, but what changes significantly is aggression and reactivity. On Wayfarer, enemies show their stances without pressing hard, stance breaks come more easily, and the game leans into multi-kill execution animations when you are surrounded. You are not missing story content, and the blade clashes still look exactly as good.

Best for: players who bought Phantom Blade Zero for the wuxia spectacle rather than the punishment.

Should you start on Pathbreaker?

For most players, yes. Pathbreaker keeps the core loop intact: blocking, parrying, dodging, and managing Sha-Chi (the combat resource spent on blocks and heavy attacks) without the extra AI aggression of Hellwalker. If you have finished a couple of action RPGs before but are not specifically hunting a hard time, this is the right default. You can step up later.

What does Hellwalker actually change?

This is where Phantom Blade Zero separates itself from the "hard mode equals bigger numbers" approach. Liang described the goal as making enemies behave like a human opponent in a player-versus-player fight. Hellwalker enemies feint to bait you, stop a combo halfway to see what you commit to, and then punish it. The AI runs on behavior trees tuned to feel reactive, not input-reading.

His concrete example is the Flower Bride boss. On Hellwalker she attacks more actively, and her single white flower attack becomes three white flowers coming from different directions. Liang said that fight is hard even for some of S-GAME's own designers.

Pick Hellwalker if: you finished Sekiro, Nioh, or Lies of P, you enjoy learning bosses through repetition, or you plan to attempt 66 Days after your first clear.

How does 66 Days mode work?

66 Days ties the difficulty directly to Soul's story. The protagonist has 66 days left to live after being framed for his master's murder. In this mode, every death costs one of those days.

  • Difficulty: identical to Hellwalker. Liang confirmed both modes use the same top-tier enemy AI with no gap between them.
  • The one extra rule: you get 66 total deaths for the entire run. At the 67th death, the playthrough ends.
  • Unlocking it: reported to open after finishing the game on Pathbreaker or Hellwalker. Treat this as reported until confirmed in the launch build.
  • Deathless clear: nobody on the S-GAME team has finished 66 Days without dying yet, though Liang believes a player will eventually manage it.
  • Journalist context: Liang noted at a press roundtable that some journalists had already burned through around 20 of their 66 retries just in Chapters One and Two.

Because enemies never get smarter than Hellwalker, the real test here is consistency across every boss in the run, not raw difficulty. The mistake most players will make is treating it like a hard-mode run when it is actually a stamina test of clean play across 25-plus hours.

What happens when you die in Phantom Blade Zero?

Death is considerably gentler than in a traditional Soulslike. Pre-release previews confirmed that you lose nothing on death and enemies do not respawn. There is no currency to drop and recover, which removes the biggest frustration point the genre is known for. On standard modes this makes experimentation essentially free.

How long is Phantom Blade Zero?

Liang's estimate is 25 to 30 hours for an experienced player who does not get stuck on bosses. He stressed that the main variable is time spent on boss fights, and that S-GAME cut grinding, filler side quests, and empty traversal to keep the runtime dense.

  • Full run (experienced player): 25 to 30 hours
  • Slower runs or Hellwalker: expect longer depending on boss attempts
  • Weapons available: more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges (secondary weapons), per the PlayStation Blog
  • Side quests: completing some opens new story paths
  • New Game Plus: confirmed, no new story content locked behind it

Liang's advice if you get stuck is not to grind reflexes. Phantom Blade Zero is an RPG: swap weapons, change accessories, or reforge an upgraded weapon to recover its materials and reinvest them elsewhere. A weapon suited to a specific boss can change the fight significantly.

NG+ is built around taking powerful late-game weapons into earlier encounters. Those weapons get little time to shine before a first playthrough ends, so a replay gives them more fights. No exclusive new content is locked behind NG+.

Phantom Blade Zero Platinum trophy: what do you actually need?

The PS5 trophy list has gone live ahead of launch, revealing 36 trophies total, including the Platinum. The list is straightforward by action game standards.

Here is what the list requires:

  • Complete the main campaign (on any difficulty)
  • Fully upgrade and perform Tempering on one weapon
  • Collect 10 Memory Flowers
  • Find 30 accessories
  • Beat bosses and complete quests (most trophies are tied to these)

Liang confirmed at a press roundtable that most players can earn the Platinum in one run on any difficulty, as long as they spend time exploring, fighting, and learning the mechanics. That means Wayfarer is a valid Platinum route.

Are there missable trophies?

This is the part that needs attention. Some trophies are tied to faction questlines and the game's 66-day narrative structure. Late-game faction decisions can lock out specific questline achievements if you cross certain story thresholds without completing them first.

The practical advice: do not sprint through the main story ignoring side content. Pay attention to the in-game calendar, and back up your save manually before major story decision points if you want to see all faction endings without a full second playthrough.

Does difficulty affect trophies?

No. All trophies and Steam achievements can be earned on any difficulty setting, including with assistive combat modifiers active. There are no trophies locked behind Hellwalker or 66 Days clears.

For a full breakdown of combat mechanics you will need to know regardless of difficulty, the Phantom Blade Zero combat guide covering Sha-Chi, parry, and Ghoststep covers the core system in detail.

Which difficulty should you pick?

  • You want the story and the kung fu spectacle: Wayfarer.
  • You have played a few action RPGs and want a fair fight: Pathbreaker.
  • You love Sekiro-style duels and boss pattern learning: Hellwalker.
  • You have already cleared the game and want a real test: 66 Days.

The safest plan for most players is Pathbreaker first, then Hellwalker or 66 Days in New Game Plus once you have the late-game weapons. Deaths cost nothing in standard modes and the setting can reportedly be adjusted mid-game, so there is very little downside to starting one rung higher than you think you need.
