At some point in your Kanto journey, you’ll hit a very large problem.
Literally.
Snorlax is blocking two major routes in the game Route 12 and Route 16 and you cannot get past it without progressing the story properly.
Here’s exactly what you need to do.
Step 1: Get the Silph Scope
Before you can wake up Snorlax, you must progress through Lavender Town.
How to Get the Silph Scope:
- Defeat Team Rocket at the Celadon City Game Corner.
- Access the hidden Rocket Hideout.
- Defeat Giovanni at the end of the hideout.
- He will drop the Silph Scope.
This item allows you to identify ghosts in Pokémon Tower.

Step 2: Clear Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town
Once you have the Silph Scope:
- Go to Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town.
- Climb to the top floor.
- Identify and defeat the ghost (Marowak).
- Rescue Mr. Fuji.
- He will reward you with the Poké Flute.
This is the key item you need.
Step 3: Use the Poké Flute on Snorlax
Now return to either:
- Route 12 (east of Lavender Town)
- Route 16 (west of Celadon City)
Interact with the sleeping Snorlax.
When prompted, use the Poké Flute from your Key Items.
Snorlax will wake up and immediately initiate a battle.

Important Things to Know Before Battling
There are only two Snorlax in the entire game.
If you defeat it without catching it, it will not respawn.
So save your game before the battle.
Snorlax is Level 30 and has strong defensive stats. Bring:
- Fighting-type moves
- Strong physical attackers
- Plenty of Poké Balls
Ultra Balls make this much easier.
Which Snorlax Should You Catch?
They are identical in stats and level.
The only difference is location.
Route 12 gives access toward Fuchsia City via the east.
Route 16 clears the Cycling Road path.
Most players wake whichever one blocks their immediate path first.
Pro Tips Before Waking Snorlax
- Save before the fight.
- Lower its HP carefully, avoid strong critical hits.
- Status effects like Sleep or Paralysis help.
- Don’t risk knocking it out if you want it on your team.
Snorlax is one of the best tanks in Gen 3 and it remains extremely viable for the Elite Four.
What Happens After You Wake Both?
Once both Snorlax are gone, the routes remain permanently open.
There are no additional Snorlax encounters in FireRed or LeafGreen.
