Eevee is one of the most flexible Pokémon you can get in FireRed and LeafGreen but the game doesn’t hand it to you early and it definitely doesn’t explain your evolution options.
Here’s what you need to know to get Eevee and evolve it properly.
How to Get Eevee in FireRed & LeafGreen
You receive Eevee as a gift Pokémon in Celadon City.
Steps:
- Reach Celadon City.
- Enter the back entrance of the Celadon Mansion (the tall building near the Pokémon Center).
- Go to the rooftop.
- Talk to the NPC inside the room.
- You’ll receive a Level 25 Eevee.
You only get one Eevee per save file unless you trade.

All Eeveelutions Available in FireRed & LeafGreen
Unlike later generations, FireRed and LeafGreen only include the original three Eeveelutions:
- Vaporeon
- Jolteon
- Flareon
You cannot obtain Espeon or Umbreon in FRLG because the game lacks the day/night system required for friendship evolutions.
How to Evolve Eevee
Eevee evolves using elemental stones.
There is no level requirement. Once you use the stone, evolution happens immediately.
Vaporeon
Evolution Item: Water Stone

Vaporeon is one of the strongest Water-types in Kanto with excellent HP and solid Special Attack.
Where to Get a Water Stone:
- Celadon Department Store (4th Floor)
Cost: 2,100 Pokédollars
Vaporeon is often considered the safest competitive choice because of its bulk and versatility.
Jolteon
Evolution Item: Thunder Stone

Jolteon has extremely high Speed and strong Special Attack, making it one of the best Electric-types in Kanto.
Where to Get a Thunder Stone:
- Celadon Department Store (4th Floor)
Cost: 2,100 Pokédollars
If you didn’t choose Pikachu or don’t plan to use Electabuzz (FireRed exclusive), Jolteon fills the Electric role perfectly.
Flareon
Evolution Item: Fire Stone

Flareon has high Attack but suffers from limited physical Fire-type moves in Gen 3, which slightly reduces its effectiveness compared to later generations.
Where to Get a Fire Stone:
- Celadon Department Store (4th Floor)
Cost: 2,100 Pokédollars
Flareon works well in casual play but isn’t as efficient as Vaporeon or Jolteon in most team compositions.
Which Eeveelution Is Best?
Here’s the quick breakdown:
Vaporeon
- Best overall bulk
- Strong Special Attack
- Very reliable Water-type
Jolteon
- Extremely fast
- Strong Special Attacker
- Excellent late-game utility
Flareon
- High Attack stat
- More limited movepool in Gen 3
- Best for players who simply prefer Fire-type builds
Most players choose Vaporeon or Jolteon for performance reasons.
Can You Get All Eeveelutions in One Playthrough?
No.
You only receive one Eevee per game. To obtain all three evolutions, you’ll need to:
- Trade additional Eevee from another save file
- Or trade evolved forms from another version
There are no wild Eevee encounters in FireRed or LeafGreen.
Pro Tip Before Evolving
Before using a stone, consider teaching Eevee moves it won’t learn after evolution.
Once evolved, Eevee stops learning its base-level moves. Planning your moveset before evolving can save you from using expensive TMs later.
