The Swamp of Sorrows leveling window in Forever is 35 to 45 for Horde and 35 to 42 for Alliance. Horde get a real hub in Stonard, a murloc chain that ends with a choice of three weapons, and an Atal'ai chain that pays out again at 50. Alliance get one stranded watchman, four quests, and a long walk to Nethergarde Keep.
Short version for people who stop reading here: arrive at 35 to 38, clear Stonard, Misty Reed Post and the Harborage, skip the elites, and leave at 44 or 45. This WoW Forever Swamp of Sorrows route uses the 1.x quest set, because that is what Forever runs on in Swamp of Sorrows until Blizzard says otherwise.
What Forever Changes Here
World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4, 2026. It keeps the level cap at 60 and adds three new zones, nine dungeons, and over 1,000 quests. The swamp is not on the revamp list. Its new problem is a neighbour: the Riverglades, a 35 to 45 zone wedged between Redridge, the Burning Steppes, the Badlands, and the swamp itself.
Anyone reading a WoW Forever leveling guide should treat this zone as a side dish now, not the main course. Quest levels were checked against 1.x data during the WoW Forever beta, so numbers may still shift before launch.
| Level | What to do |
|---|---|
| 35 to 38 | Arrive, collect every Stonard and Harborage quest |
| 38 to 42 | Fallow Sanctuary, Noboru, Galen, Pool of Tears |
| 42 to 45 | Murloc chain on the beach, Kargath hand-in, leave |
| 45 to 57 | Fallen Hero chain between the swamp and the Blasted Lands |
| 50+ | Sunken Temple dungeon quest |
How to Get In: Flight Paths and Waypoints
Stonard is the only flight master in the zone, and it is Horde only. Alliance have nothing here and fly from Darkshire or Nethergarde Keep instead.
- Horde fly into Stonard, where Breyk links to Grom'Gol, Booty Bay, Kargath, and Flame Crest.
- On a first visit, walk east from Darkshire in Duskwood through Deadwind Pass and hug the northern edge, where nothing attacks you.
- A climbable pass south of Render's Valley in Redridge drops you in from the north if you enjoy falling.
- The masochist route is to jump off Thandol Span and swim south along the coast to Misty Reed Strand.
- Forever adds a Steamwheedle boat from Tanaris to Powderfuse Port in the Riverglades next door, and fan trackers report a new fork off the Redridge road as well.
| Waypoint | Coordinates |
|---|---|
| Fel'zerul, Stonard | 47.9, 54.8 |
| Kartosh, warlock trainer | 48.7, 55.6 |
| Draenethyst crystals, Fallow Sanctuary | 62.3, 23.6 |
| Galen's camp and strongbox | 47, 39 |
| Itharius, cave in the west | 13.7, 71.7 |
| Atal'ai Exile, Shadra'Alor in the Hinterlands | 33, 75 |
Quest Hubs and Breadcrumbs
There are six hubs, and only one of them has an innkeeper. WoW Forever quests from other zones also route through here, so check your log before you arrive.
| Hub | Faction | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Stonard | Horde | Pool of Tears, Lack of Surplus, Neeka Bloodscar, Disgraced One turn-in |
| Misty Reed Post | Horde | Second Lack of Surplus, Threat From the Sea, Continued Threat, Swamp Talker |
| The Harborage | Both | Draenethyst Crystals, Noboru turn-in |
| Watcher Biggs camp | Alliance | Four-quest chain ending at Nethergarde |
| Fallen Hero of the Horde | Both | 50 to 57 chain toward the Blasted Lands |
| Itharius's Cave | Both | Sunken Temple lore chain at 55 |
- Dream Dust in the Swamp comes from Krazek in Booty Bay and sends you here for whelp dust.
- Ongeku comes from the Gelkis in Desolace and needs the Draenethyst Shard from a Lost One in Fallow Sanctuary.
- Neeka Bloodscar is a Stonard breadcrumb that pays you to fly to Kargath.
- The Sunken Temple sends you to Marvon Rivetseeker in Tanaris before the dungeon.
Horde Quest Order
Horde leveling through the swamp is one clean loop: Stonard, the beach, Fallow Sanctuary, the lake, then back to Stonard. Do it in this order and you will not walk anything twice.
- Take Lack of Surplus from Dar, Pool of Tears from Fel'zerul, and Neeka Bloodscar from Helgrum the Swift before you leave Stonard.
- Kill adult Sawtooth Crocolisks on the way east for eight flanks , the young ones are not on the menu.
- Hand the flanks to Tok'Kar at Misty Reed Post and take the second Lack of Surplus for six Sawtooth Snapper Claws.
- Walk Threat From the Sea over to Katar and take the second Threat From the Sea, which asks for ten each of Marsh Murlocs, Inkspewers, and Flesheaters.
- Return to Tok'Kar through the third Threat From the Sea and pick your weapon.
- Take Continued Threat, which adds Marsh Oracles, and finish it while you still stand on the beach.
- Grab Draenethyst Crystals from Magtoor at the Harborage, the Broken camp in the northwest.
- Clear Fallow Sanctuary for crystals and free Galen for Galen's Escape, then open his strongbox at 47, 39.
- Kill Noboru when his gang wanders north of Stonard and hand in Noboru the Cudgel at the Harborage.
- Dive for ten Atal'ai Artifacts around the sunken temple lake and turn them in to Fel'zerul.
- Carry The Atal'ai Exile to Shadra'Alor in the Hinterlands, where the exile waits beside the steps of the southern pyramid.
- Bring back Return to Fel'Zerul and park The Temple of Atal'Hakkar in your log until 50.
- Fly to Kargath and hand in Neeka Bloodscar for free XP and Orgrimmar reputation.
Alliance Quest Order
Alliance leveling gets four quests from Watcher Biggs plus the neutral hubs. It is thin, but it ends with a flight path , which is more than the swamp usually gives anyone.
- Take Draenethyst Crystals from Magtoor at the Harborage as you enter from Deadwind Pass.
- Find Biggs between Splinterspear Junction and the Blasted Lands turn and take Encroaching Wildlife.
- Kill Young Sawtooth Crocolisks, Sorrow Spinners, and Swamp Jaguars, and farm the whelps west of Biggs for Dream Dust while you are there.
- Take The Lost Caravan and loot the reagents from the wagon east of Fallow Sanctuary.
- Kill Ongeku at the campfire near that wagon if you carry the Gelkis quest.
- Take Driftwood and reach Misty Reed Strand through Fallow Sanctuary rather than from the south, where the elites live.
- Carry Deliver the Shipment to Quartermaster Lungertz in Nethergarde Keep and take the flight path there.
- Loot any Scattered Crate you pass and run The Lost Supplies to Lungertz for Stormwind reputation.
This route uses the 1.x quest set. Stonard quests added in later expansions do not exist in this baseline, and neither do the goblin towns from later expansions. If a guide tells you to go to Bogpaddle, it is a guide for another game.
Elite and Group Quests: Do or Skip
The swamp hides its elites near the temple and in the east. WoW Forever Sunken Temple content starts at 50, so anything touching the dungeon waits.
| Content | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Pool of Tears | Flagged group. Duo it, or come back a few levels above 43. |
| The Temple of Atal'Hakkar quest | Keep it in your log until you have a group for the Sunken Temple. |
| Sorrowmurk | Elite dragonspawn camp east of the temple. Skip. |
| Lord Captain Wyrmak | Level 45 rare elite outside the temple. Skip solo. |
| The Swamp Talker | Murloc cave to the east at 55. Do it when you arrive for the Fallen Hero chain. |
| The Stones That Bind Us | Eighteen servants at binding stones across the Blasted Lands. Group advised, but one stone can be reused. |
| Kirith | Group quest at 58. Skip unless you already have a group. |
The Fallen Hero chain runs from 50 to 57, so you do it on a return trip. For Horde it goes Fall From Grace, The Disgraced One, The Missing Orders, then The Swamp Talker for Bengor at Misty Reed Post. Alliance join through Petty Squabbles from the Blasted Lands. Both factions then do A Tale of Sorrow, the binding stones, and the two parts of Heroes of Old: the first and the second.

WoW Forever Swamp of Sorrows Leveling Guide: Quests, Route & Rares
Best Quest Rewards and Drops Worth Keeping
| Reward | Why keep it |
|---|---|
| Tok'kar's Murloc Shanker, Basher or Chopper | The only real weapon upgrade in the zone. Pick your weapon type. |
| Shard of Afrasa | A trinket from the second Heroes of Old at 57, and the best thing the swamp gives. |
| Galen's strongbox | Free loot for one escort. |
| Living Cowl | A chance drop from Molt Thorn. Take it if it drops. |
Rares
| Rare | Level | Where and verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Lost One Chieftain | 39 | The Shifting Mire. Kill it on sight. |
| Molt Thorn | 42 | A bog beast with a Thorn Volley. Worth it for the cowl. |
| Gilmorian | 43 | A murloc on Misty Reed Strand, handy during the beach chain. |
| Lord Captain Wyrmak | 45 | Rare elite by the temple. Bring a group or leave it alone. |
Lost One Cook also wanders the Lost One camps. Kill it if you see it; do not plan your evening around it.
Farm Spots and Professions
The zone is small, wet, and full of nodes nobody else wants , gathering as you go pays off.
- Herbalists find Stranglekelp, Kingsblood, Liferoot, Fadeleaf, Goldthorn, Khadgar's Whisker, and Blindweed, which grows in very few other places.
- Skinners take Green Whelp Scales from the low-30s whelps and Shadowcat Hides from the panthers.
- Elite whelps and wyrmkin around the temple give Green Dragonscale, if you enjoy dying for leather.
- Miners find Silver, Iron, Gold, Mithril, and Truesilver.
- Stonard hosts the master alchemy trainer, so Horde alchemists will pass through anyway.
When to Leave and Where to Go Next
Leave at 44 or 45, once Continued Threat is done. WoW Forever Riverglades covers the same 35 to 45 band with close to 200 quests, so if you arrived under 38, go there first and come back for the swamp's leftovers.
- Horde at 40 fly from Stonard to Grom'Gol or Kargath for Stranglethorn and the Badlands.
- Alliance take the new Nethergarde flight path and head back toward Stranglethorn or Desolace.
- Both factions return at 45 to 50 for the Fallen Hero chain and the Blasted Lands next door.
- Both factions return again at 50 for the Sunken Temple with a group.
Ranked among WoW Classic+ leveling zones, the swamp is a mid-table filler for Horde and a pit stop for Alliance. It is efficient in short bursts and miserable in long ones.
Lore
The swamp is the northern half of the old Black Morass. After the Gurubashi Empire fell, the Atal'ai trolls fled here and built a temple to Hakkar. Ysera drowned it and posted green dragons to guard the ruins, which is why whelps now stun you in the reeds.
During the First War the orcs built Stonard, Rockard, and Kyross here. Only Stonard survived, and Thrall's Horde later rebuilt it. When the Dark Portal imploded, the southern marsh became the Blasted Lands and stranded draenei went mad as the Lost Ones. A few Broken hold the Harborage. The zone's name nods to the Swamp of Sadness from The Neverending Story, which tells you exactly how the designers felt about it.
