Overview
World of Warships: Legends is a free-to-play multiplayer naval shooter from Wargaming Group Limited. Players command historically inspired warships in battles where positioning and coordinated attacks matter alongside firepower. Its roster contains more than 600 vessels, including Yamato, USS Laffey, and USS Texas, giving naval history enthusiasts plenty of recognizable ships to command.
Legends connects individual battles through ship upgrades and Commander progression. National fleets include the USA, Japan, Germany, and several other countries, but collecting vessels is only part of the appeal. Different ship types change the decisions players make during combat, while builds offer further room to specialize.
How do the four ship types play?
World of Warships: Legends divides its fleet into four ship types, each with a distinct combat role:

- Destroyers: speed and stealth
- Battleships: armor and firepower
- Cruisers: flexible combat roles
- Aircraft carriers: squadron control
Aircraft carriers change the player's focus by putting air squadrons under their command, extending their influence across the map. Destroyers instead emphasize movement and concealment. These differences make positioning a class-specific problem: the same approach does not suit every vessel, and coordinated teams need to account for those different strengths.

Destroyers and battleships bring different tools to tactical naval combat.

Commander builds and customization
More than 150 historical and fictional Commanders add another decision beyond choosing a ship. Each Commander has a distinct skill tree that supports specialized builds. Matching those skills to a vessel gives fleet preparation a tactical purpose, with ship upgrades providing another layer of progression.
Commander guises change appearances and voiceovers, giving customization a separate cosmetic side. Legends makes room for both historical figures and fictional personalities at the helm, so its presentation is less strictly historical than the warship roster alone might suggest.
Commander skill trees support specialized warship builds.

PvP, PvE, and crossover content
Legends includes competitive PvP battles and PvE events, with mission chains, a battle pass, and War Tales providing additional activities. These systems create goals alongside the immediate task of winning a battle, connecting short combat sessions to longer progression paths.
Star Trek and Azur Lane collaborations bring themed ships, Commanders, and cosmetics into the content mix. Those licensed additions sit beside the historically inspired fleet, giving Legends a broader identity than a strictly period-focused naval game. Wargaming's major updates also introduce ships, Commanders, and game modes.
Cross-play and shared progression
World of Warships: Legends supports cross-platform play between PC, console, and mobile. Cross-progression lets players link an existing console or mobile account to Steam while retaining progress, subject to account-linking rules. That makes an established fleet relevant across supported platforms rather than tying it to one device.
On PC, Legends supports keyboard controls, gamepads, and handheld devices, including Steam Deck. Combined with shared progression, those options give the multiplayer naval shooter a practical strength: players can keep developing their ships and Commander builds while choosing the supported platform and controls that suit each session.
