Introduction

Absolver takes the fighting game formula and makes it personal. Sloclap's stance-based combat RPG gives every player a genuinely unique martial arts style, built move by move through a Combat Deck system that rewards experimentation and observation in equal measure. Every encounter online is a chance to learn something new, steal a technique, or find a rival worth fighting again.

Overview

Absolver drops players into the decaying remnants of the Adal Empire as a Prospect, a masked warrior being tested by the Guides for entry into an elite order of fighters called Absolvers. The premise is sparse by design. Sloclap built the world around combat rather than cutscenes, and the result is an action RPG that communicates its lore through architecture, atmosphere, and the fighting styles of the strangers you meet along the way.

The game released in August 2017 and holds a 4.02 rating from over 18,000 PlayStation players, which speaks to a dedicated fanbase even years after launch. Devolver Digital published it across PlayStation 4, Xbox, and PC, making it accessible on most major platforms. The tone sits somewhere between a martial arts film and a FromSoftware-style RPG, though Absolver carves out its own identity rather than borrowing wholesale from either.

How does the Combat Deck system work?

The Combat Deck is what separates Absolver from every other fighting game on the market. Players arrange attacks across four stances, chaining moves together into a personalized sequence that flows between them. You do not unlock a fixed moveset. You learn individual attacks by absorbing them from enemies who use them against you, then slot those moves wherever they fit your style.

Key mechanics at the core of combat:

  • Stance-based attack chaining across four positions
  • Move absorption by surviving attacks in combat
  • Parry, dodge, and deflect options per stance
  • Weapon equipping that shifts available moves
  • School system for sharing and teaching your deck

The depth here is real. Two players who have put equal time into Absolver can fight each other with completely different move libraries and completely different rhythms. That asymmetry is the game's sharpest design decision.

Multiplayer and social design

Absolver blends PvP and PvE in a way that refuses to separate them cleanly. The world is shared, meaning other players can appear in your session as you explore. An encounter might turn hostile, stay neutral, or evolve into something collaborative. The Schools system formalizes this by letting players found or join martial arts schools, sharing Combat Deck layouts and teaching techniques to followers.

Up to 6 players can engage online on PlayStation 4 with PS Plus. The social design rewards patience. Watching how another player fights, identifying their patterns, and adapting your own deck in response is the loop that keeps long-term players engaged far beyond the campaign.

World and setting

The Adal Empire is a post-collapse world rendered in sun-bleached stone, crumbling towers, and overgrown courtyards. Sloclap leaned into environmental storytelling hard enough that the setting feels lived-in without extensive dialogue. The masked aesthetic of the Prospects gives every player character a visual identity that fits the world's mythology without forcing a specific look.

The atmosphere rewards slow exploration. Side paths lead to optional encounters, hidden items, and the occasional ambush from a player who figured out the same shortcut before you did. The world is not large by open-world standards, but its density makes it feel more considered than sprawling.

Impact and legacy

Absolver arrived as a genuinely original fighting RPG at a time when the genre had calcified around established franchises. The Combat Deck system influenced how developers think about player expression in fighting games, and Sloclap went on to build Sifu using lessons learned here. Balance updates continued through at least patch 1.30 in 2019, and the Schools feature received ongoing rework. For players who want stance-based martial arts combat with real mechanical depth and a world that earns its mystery, Absolver remains a distinct and worthwhile experience.
