Introduction

For Honor pits three of history's most iconic warrior cultures against each other in melee combat that actually demands skill. Ubisoft Montreal's Art of Battle system turns every duel into a read-your-opponent puzzle, and with over 30 heroes across five factions now in the roster, the fighting game depth here runs deeper than most players expect going in.

Overview

For Honor launched in February 2017 and has kept a dedicated playerbase alive for nearly a decade through consistent content updates. The premise is simple on paper: Knights, Vikings, Samurai, and Wu Lin warriors clash across war-torn maps in modes ranging from 1v1 duels to 4v4 team battles. The execution, though, is anything but simple. Ubisoft Montreal built a directional guard system called the Art of Battle that turns melee combat into something closer to a fighting game than an action brawler.

The Art of Battle works by assigning attack and guard directions to the left stick or mouse, meaning every exchange requires reading your opponent's stance before committing. Feints, parries, guard breaks, and unblockable attacks layer on top of that foundation, creating matchups where knowledge of a hero's moveset matters as much as reaction time. Newer players will lose a lot of duels early, but the skill ceiling is high enough that mastering a single hero takes genuine investment.

Year 10 of For Honor is currently active, with Ubisoft continuing to push seasonal roadmaps that bring new heroes, limited-time events, and balance updates. The game now features cross-platform play across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, which keeps queue times healthy across all modes.

Gameplay and mechanics

The hero roster breaks down into four class archetypes:

  • Assassin: fast, low health, high damage
  • Heavy: slow, high health, punishing attacks
  • Vanguard: balanced stats, straightforward kits
  • Hybrid: mixed abilities, often complex execution

Each of the 30-plus heroes plays meaningfully differently within those categories. The Lawbringer plays nothing like the Conqueror despite both being Knight-faction Heavies. That variety is what keeps the PvP from going stale. Ranked modes and Duel tournaments give competitive players a structured ladder to climb, while casual modes like Dominion (4v4 territory control) offer a lower-stakes entry point.

What does the story campaign offer?

For Honor includes a single-player story campaign that runs players through all three original factions. It functions as an extended tutorial as much as a narrative experience, teaching hero-specific mechanics through boss encounters and castle sieges. The story itself centers on a warlord named Apollyon manipulating the factions into endless war, and while it is not the game's main attraction, it holds up as an accessible way to learn the combat before jumping into PvP. Campaign missions support solo or co-op play.

Multiplayer and content depth

The multiplayer suite covers 1v1 Duels, 2v2 Brawls, and several 4v4 modes spread across 18 maps. Seasonal events rotate in limited cosmetics and special game modes, giving returning players a reason to log back in. The gear system lets players customize heroes with thousands of weapon and armor pieces, most of which are cosmetic at endgame rather than stat-defining, which keeps competitive integrity intact.

The Ultimate Edition bundles 12 additional heroes beyond the base roster, and the Gold Edition includes 6. Both are worth considering given how much playtime a single hero can generate once the Art of Battle clicks. With cross-play active and Year 10 content still rolling out, For Honor remains one of the more active melee combat games available on PC and console.
