Overview
Astral Flux is a 2D action-platformer with roguelite mechanics built around a simple but effective premise: two scrappers stumble into an intergalactic mystery they are wildly unprepared for. Released on October 28, 2022 by developer Cosmocat and publisher Mindscape, the game is available on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch. Every run ends in death, but death is the point. Players carry forward knowledge, upgraded skills, and a clearer picture of what killed them last time.
The core loop keeps things tight. Players traverse hostile alien planets, fight or dodge creatures adapted to each environment, and push through procedurally generated challenge rooms that offer upgrades as rewards. The randomized level structure means the path forward shifts with each attempt, and surviving long enough to unravel the story requires genuine improvement rather than memorization.

Gameplay and mechanics
Astral Flux earns its roguelite label through a progression system that survives death. Skills and abilities can be upgraded mid-run, and the knowledge players accumulate across failed attempts directly informs how they approach the next one. The game does not hand out second chances cheaply.

Key mechanics include:
- Randomized level layouts each run
- Procedurally generated challenge rooms
- Skill and ability upgrades mid-run
- Fight-or-evade enemy encounters
- Artifacts that persist beyond death
Challenge rooms sit at the center of the upgrade loop. Clear one and the reward is a meaningful power boost. Fail and the run gets harder. The tension between pushing forward and farming upgrades gives each session a genuine decision-making weight.

What has free post-launch content added?
Three free updates have meaningfully expanded the game since launch. Submerged introduces a new planet where ancient horrors lurk underwater, bringing enemy types and environmental hazards not present in the base game. Artifact Hunter adds world-destroying enemies that obliterate everything in their path, alongside powerful artifacts that carry over between deaths. Balance of Power rounds things out with new tools and improved challenge rooms that push the difficulty ceiling higher.
These updates are not cosmetic additions. Each one changes how players approach runs by introducing mechanics that interact with the existing progression system in concrete ways. The Artifact Hunter update in particular shifts the risk calculus significantly, since the artifacts it introduces survive death and can compound in power across multiple runs.
World and setting
The galaxy Astral Flux builds is hostile by design. Ancient alien ruins, distant dimensions, and planet-specific creature types create a sense that this universe existed long before the player characters arrived and will continue after they are gone. The two scrappers at the center of the story are not heroes by trade, which gives the mystery a different texture than most genre entries.

Each planet carries its own visual identity and enemy roster, so progression through the game feels like moving through genuinely distinct environments rather than reskinned versions of the same space. The underwater planet introduced in the Submerged update is a strong example of how the setting expands without losing coherence. Ancient horrors in the water read as a natural extension of a universe already built around dangerous unknowns.
