Overview
Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a co-op roguelite FPS developed by Behaviour Interactive and published by Devolver Digital, built for 1 to 5 players. The setup: Uber Mental has shattered the walls between dimensions, pulling Serious Sams from across the multiverse into the same war. As part of the Serious Program, players travel through shifting universes to finish battles that other versions of Sam couldn't, hunting down five of Mental's most dangerous lieutenants along the way.
The game lands on PC via Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation, and carries all the hallmarks of the Serious Sam legacy: arena-scale firefights, relentless enemy hordes, and a tone that never takes itself too seriously. What Shatterverse adds to that formula is a roguelite structure that keeps every run feeling distinct, with procedurally shifting stages built inside hand-crafted arenas set in worlds the franchise has never visited before.
Gameplay and mechanics
The core loop follows familiar roguelite logic, but the scale is distinctly Serious Sam. Runs push through increasingly hostile arenas, with death sending players back to the start rather than ending the game outright. Each attempt unlocks new possibilities, and the permanent progression system means every failed run still moves the needle.

Key mechanics that define each run:
- Boon stacking across arena clears
- Run modifiers that reshape difficulty and rewards
- Unstable anomalies offering high-risk shortcuts
- Five lieutenant bosses as progression gates
- Permanent unlocks that carry between runs
The weapon selection mixes iconic Serious Sam staples with new additions designed specifically for Shatterverse's multiverse context. The emphasis is on clearing hundreds of enemies at a time, and the arsenal is built accordingly.

What does the multiverse co-op actually change?
Shatterverse's co-op mode supports up to 5 players, which is a meaningful jump from the traditional Serious Sam co-op experience. The multiverse framing isn't just cosmetic: players are literally fighting alongside alternate versions of Sam Stone from different timelines, each brought together because Mental has already won in their respective realities. That context gives the co-op sessions a weight that pure horde-blasting alone wouldn't provide.
Teamwork becomes relevant during the lieutenant boss encounters, where coordinating fire and managing boon loadouts across a full squad creates a noticeably different experience than solo runs. The difficulty scales accordingly, and the run modifier system allows groups to push harder for greater rewards at the cost of increased instability.
Content and replayability
Procedural generation handles the macro structure of each run while hand-crafted arenas handle the moment-to-moment combat spaces. That combination avoids the visual monotony that pure procedural generation can produce while still ensuring no two runs follow the same path through the Shatterverse.

The unstable anomalies scattered through each run function as the game's risk-reward spine. Hidden portals and high-pressure opportunities can supercharge a run or end it immediately, and the decision of whether to engage them is where a lot of Shatterverse's tactical depth lives. Mental's enemy roster remixes classic Serious Sam creatures alongside new monsters, which gives returning players familiar targets to dispatch while keeping the threat pool unpredictable.
Visual and audio design
Shatterverse commits fully to the arcade-style FPS energy the franchise built its reputation on. Big battlefields, nonstop enemy pressure, and a visual approach that prioritizes readability during maximum chaos. The tone stays consistent with the wider Serious Sam catalog, including the one-liners that surface at precisely the moments when everything is on fire.
The multiverse setting gives Behaviour Interactive room to design worlds that sit outside the established Serious Sam geography, which translates into arena environments that look distinct from anything the series has produced before. That visual variety reinforces the roguelite structure, making the shifting universes feel genuinely different rather than reskinned versions of the same space.
