Tracking down every Fabled Fish in Collector's Cove is one of the most satisfying challenges this cozy seafaring adventure throws at you. There are 37 unique Fabled Fish spread across four distinct regions, and each one demands a specific set of conditions before it will bite. Some require clever boat setups, others depend on the time of day, and a few will send you on a journey across multiple regions just to meet the right criteria. This guide breaks down every single one so you can fill your Compendium and strengthen that all-important Fabled Bond with your companion.
How Does the Fabled Fish System Work?
Before casting your line for any Fabled Fish, you need to understand the progression behind the system. You cannot simply show up with the right conditions and expect a Fabled Fish to appear.
Here is the exact process for every fish in the game:
- Catch the base fish a specific number of times to unlock its bait recipe.
- Catch the fish again using that bait a set number of times to reveal the Fabled Condition.
- Meet the Fabled Condition with the correct bait equipped to finally land the Fabled Fish.
Bait is crafted at your bait maker on the boat. Each recipe produces 5 batches, and you must always have the correct bait attached when attempting a Fabled catch, or you will simply reel in the normal variant.
warning
Never attempt to catch a Fabled Fish without bait equipped. Even if every other condition is perfectly met, the Fabled variant will not appear without the matching bait on your rod.
Once you catch a Fabled Fish for the first time, feed it to your companion using the Strengthen Fabled Bond interaction. This can only be done once per species, but it increases your Fabled Bond rank, which unlocks new regions, new species, and new companion abilities. You can continue catching the same Fabled Fish afterwards to sell at merchants for solid income.

Craft bait before fishing
Tropical Trove Fabled Fish: All 10 Species
Tropical Trove is the starting region of Collector's Cove. Six fish are available from the beginning, while the Giant Snakehead, Flounder, Devil Firefish, and Mahi unlock after reaching Collector Rank 5.
danger
Some bait recipes in Tropical Trove require fish and crops from later regions. Stock up whenever you travel to Sakura Shores or beyond and bring those resources back.
Parrotfish
Head to any island in Tropical Trove and find a parrot sitting on a rock. Walk up to it to scare it off, then collect the feather it leaves behind. Attach the feather to your floater, equip Bluegill bait, and fish at any freshwater pond.
Garandma
Cast your line from as far back as possible at a pond, keeping maximum distance from the water's edge. The idea is to avoid spooking this skittish fish with your presence.
Doctorfish
Fill your personal inventory completely (not a storage chest), then catch any fish while on your boat. The caught fish will drop into a pouch on the deck since your inventory has no room. Leave that pouch in place, equip Surgeonfish bait, and the Doctorfish will appear.
Comedianfish
Build and place at least 3 fish tanks on your boat, each containing a live fish. Fish tanks require glass, which is smelted from sand found on islands. Once all three tanks are stocked, fish with Clownfish bait during the active window.
Rotorfish
Travel to any island in Tropical Trove and find a cliff platform overlooking water. Cast your rod off that elevated point during the nighttime window to attract this airborne variant.
Coralfish
Your companion must be wearing at least 2 different customization accessories at the same time. Purchase these from the Secret Seller using fish and crops, then equip them via the companion's customize option.
info
If you have reached Fabled Bond Rank 9, the Lucky Flotsam blessing can occasionally drop companion accessories from flotsam crates while sailing, saving you some merchant currency.Giant Hydrahead
This one requires preparation in another region. Travel to Sakura Shores and deliberately snap your fishing line 3 times in a row using strong fish there. After the third snap, immediately head to Tropical Trove and avoid any fishing until you reach an island with a pond. Fishing before landing resets the condition entirely.
Mapleflounder
Catch 2 large fish in a row before switching to Flounder bait. Large fish become available at Collector Rank 8, identifiable by the biggest shadow shapes in the water. Catching a small or medium fish in between resets the streak.
Lionfish
Activate the Flotsam Helpers blessing, which becomes available after reaching Fabled Bond Rank 6. Cast your Devil Firefish bait directly into the swarm of Flotsam Helpers that appear around your boat.
Mahiki
Locate a tiki head on a treasure island within Tropical Trove. Feed it any fish to extinguish its flame, then fish in the sea with Mahi bait. Treasure island layouts are randomized, so you may need to restart the expedition a few times before a tiki head spawns.

Freshwater ponds hide rare Fabled Fish
Sakura Shores Fabled Fish: All 10 Species
Sakura Shores is the second region, and its Fabled Fish lean into weather conditions, companion states, and creative environmental tricks.
Chubyaki
This one uses a hidden bait recipe. At the bait maker, craft the hidden Pale Chub bait while carrying wheat, red beans, a pale chub, and a rock in your personal inventory simultaneously.
Stormeel
Simply fish during rainy weather. Keep an eye on the sky and head out when a storm rolls in.
Diamyo Koi
Place 3 excellent Koi in fish tanks on your boat. After 12 hours with all three tanks occupied by excellent-quality Koi, one of them will transform into the Diamyo Koi automatically.
Pixiefish
Have at least 3 flowerpots with flowers placed on your boat. Flowers can be picked from islands throughout Sakura Shores.
Onifish
Before casting your line, throw your fishing rod into a fire source first. Your floater will pick up the fiery effect, which attracts the Onifish.
Piffignon
Deck your boat with at least 4 light source decorations before fishing with Pufferfish bait.
Nigirifish
Fish while your companion is asleep. Wait for your companion to doze off naturally before casting.
Stealth Eel
Cast your fishing rod inside a flotsam crate rather than open water. These crates float near your boat as you sail.
Orchestrafish
Place 2 different music-generating decorations on your boat at the same time, then fish with Trumpetfish bait.
Elephant Tuna
Use the Strong Pull ability 3 times during a single catch attempt for this fish. Time the ability uses carefully across the reel-in sequence.

Catch Nigirifish while companion sleeps
Haunted Harbors Fabled Fish: All 10 Species
Haunted Harbors unlocks at Collector Rank 3 and brings 10 spooky Fabled Fish, with Catfish, Sheepshead, Chimaera, and Swordfish becoming available at Collector Rank 8.
Draculafish
Grow 3 harvestable Tomatoes on your boat (Tomatoes are a Tropical Trove crop unless you have Farming Rank 25), then fish at a freshwater pond at night.
Skeletonfish
Find a skeleton on a Haunted Harbors island and cast your line directly onto it. Your floater will take on a skeletal appearance. Fish at a pond within the correct time window with Sturgeon bait equipped.
Catwitchfish
Purchase and place all three of these decorations on your boat from the Secret Seller: the Magical Broom, the Music Box, and the Tomb Bookshelves. All three must be present simultaneously.
Signal Zomboby
While your compost bin is actively producing fertilizer, cast your fishing line directly into the bin. The floater takes on a stinky appearance. Cast that same line into saltwater to reel in the Signal Zomboby.
Mummyfish
Fill your inventory completely, then catch an excellent Sheepshead so it drops into a pouch on the deck. Leave the pouch untouched for a few hours. Watch for green stinky clouds around the pouch, which signals the transformation into a Mummyfish.
Ghost Shark
A ghost must be following you while you fish. Find a ghost at a treasure island in Haunted Harbors and lead it around without guiding it to its grave. Fish for the Ghost Shark with the ghost in tow. Conveniently, this condition also satisfies the Ghost Pear crop requirement, so tackle both at once if your Pear tree is harvestable and fertilized.
Plungerhead Fish
Sit at your boat's Plunger Gun and fire at 3 fish in the water to scare them away. After frightening all 3, the Plungerhead Fish becomes catchable with Arrowhead Dogfish bait.
Wattfish
Cast your rod into an active light source decoration on your boat to make the floater glow. Then fish at night with Anglerfish bait.
Shieldfish
Craft the hidden armoured bait at the bait maker. To do this, you must have one of each ingot type in your personal inventory: Copper, Silver, Gold, and Galaxy. Smelt any missing ingots at the Smelter first.
Stitchfish
Wear a sweater and beanie while catching this fish. Change your outfit at the mirror in your boat's cabin. Since the Batplant crop requires all-black clothing, wearing a black sweater and black beanie lets you satisfy both conditions in one go.
info
Plan your Haunted Harbors session around outfit requirements. The Batplant needs all-black clothes, while the Stitchfish just needs a sweater and beanie. A black sweater and black beanie satisfies both at the same time.

Ghost Shark needs a ghost escort
Galaxy Glaciers Fabled Fish: All 7 Species
Galaxy Glaciers is the final region and features 7 Fabled Fish with some of the most creative conditions in the game.
Moon Sailorfish
Change your character's outfit at any point within the last 12 hours of game time before fishing with Sun Perch bait.
Zander Klaus
Equip a Christmas sweater from your wardrobe before fishing. No other conditions required.
Milkyway Trout
Locate a floating water bubble in Galaxy Glaciers and cast your line directly into it with Lake Trout bait.
Shooting Starfish
Wait for a meteor shower event and fish during it with Starfish bait. Meteor showers are time-limited, so be ready to cast quickly.
Blackhole Fish
Fill your boat's various storage locations with a total of 500 items before fishing with Cobia bait. This is a significant preparation task, so plan accordingly.
Galacuda
Place the Cosmic Mirror decoration on your boat and cast your fishing line directly into it with Barracuda bait.
Starray
Use a telescope on your boat to observe the moon. An elusive fish will appear in the water directly in front of your boat. Cast with Ray bait immediately to catch the Starray.
What Should You Do With Fabled Fish After Catching Them?
Every Fabled Fish serves two purposes beyond the satisfaction of catching it.
- Feed your companion via Strengthen Fabled Bond the first time you catch each species. This is the primary driver of progression, unlocking new regions and companion abilities as your Fabled Bond rank climbs.
- Sell extras at merchants for a strong return. Fabled Fish command high prices and provide a reliable income stream for boat upgrades, seeds, and decoration purchases.
You can also feed additional Fabled Fish to your companion for stamina boosts, giving you more active time during expeditions.
info
Feeding your companion a Fabled Fish for the first time via Strengthen Fabled Bond can only be done once per species. After that, all further catches of that Fabled Fish can be sold or used for stamina.
Pro Tips for Hunting Fabled Fish Efficiently
- Always check the water source (saltwater vs. freshwater) and time of day before setting up conditions. Meeting every other requirement but fishing in the wrong spot wastes time.
- Stock up on fish and crops from every region you visit. Many bait recipes in earlier regions require ingredients from later areas.
- When conditions involve treasure island events (like the Ghost Shark or Mahiki), restart expeditions as needed since island layouts are randomized.
- Combine outfit-based conditions where possible. The Stitchfish and Batplant can share a black sweater and beanie outfit, saving you multiple wardrobe trips.
- The Mummyfish transformation takes a few in-game hours after the Sheepshead drops into a pouch. Set it up early in a session and work on other objectives while waiting.
