Crimson Desert ...

The Gate to the Otherworld is the 56th main quest in Crimson Desert, sitting inside Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge. You arrive at Scholastone Institute, meet an orc scholar named Octavius who wants to rip open a portal to the abyss, and then everything goes sideways in the best possible way. The quest is almost entirely puzzle-based, with one aerial boss fight tacked on at the end. Rewards on completion: 1x Abyss Artifact and a key that unlocks the Spire of the Stars.

How do you solve the underground lock device puzzle?

Head to the northeast corner of the plaza where Octavius was lecturing. Follow the lantern-lined path downward. At the bottom, look for a wall panel called the "hatch" — interact with it to begin the puzzle.

You're looking at a 3x3 grid of 9 tiles. Pressing any tile also toggles adjacent tiles, so order matters. The goal is to get all 9 tiles glowing simultaneously.

Press the buttons in this exact sequence:

  1. Top left corner
  2. Bottom right corner
  3. Bottom left corner
  4. Top right corner
  5. Middle tile

All 9 tiles will light up. If you've already poked around and the grid is in a bad state, back out of the interaction screen to reset it, then try again from step 1.

Once all tiles glow, interact with the same panel again to pull the switch. A cutscene plays showing the ceiling mechanism activating.

How do you insert the batteries into the pillars?

Head back up to the main plaza using the staircase on the left side of the open pillared section. You'll see 4 floating cube-shaped batteries crackling with electricity near 4 pillars. Each battery belongs to the pillar directly in front of it.

Here's the process for each one:

  1. Hold Axiom Force to grab the battery
  2. Float it directly in front of the slot opening on the pillar — the game auto-rotates the cube to align it once it's close enough
  3. Release Axiom Force, then immediately use Force Palm to punch it into the slot

Repeat for all 4 batteries. Each successful insertion fires a laser beam toward the central orb. Once all 4 are in, a cutscene plays and Octavius begins his experiment.

Things do not go well.

How do you remove the unstable core?

The portal becomes unstable and the game prompts you to use Axiom Force to remove the unstable core. Aim at the glowing blue orb in the center of the device, hold Axiom Force, then hold the pull input and push the right stick upward for a few seconds. The core will tear free.

Octavius gets pulled into his own experiment. A shadowy entity called Tenebrum spawns and the boss fight begins.

How do you defeat Tenebrum?

Before attacking, the game walks you through using Blinding Flash to reveal Tenebrum's weak point. Aim at the creature and activate Blinding Flash — a square marker will appear on it indicating its core. You only need to do this once; after that the weakness stays visible.

The actual fight is straightforward once you understand the movement system:

  • Double-jump over the open section of the plaza floor where Tenebrum circles. The updraft will carry you airborne without needing to climb anything.
  • Tenebrum moves constantly and fires shadow projectiles at you. Avoid these while staying in the air.
  • Wait for Tenebrum to drift to the center of the arena and begin charging a shockwave attack. That's your window.
  • While airborne, use Force Palm to strike it. One clean hit takes off a significant chunk of health.
  • Repeat 3 times total to finish the fight.

If your Spirit runs out mid-fight, duck behind one of the pillars and hold the Spirit recovery input (hold both sticks simultaneously on controller) to meditate and recharge before going back in.

What do you get for completing Gate to the Otherworld?

After Tenebrum falls, pick up the Abyss Artifact that appears where Octavius was standing. You'll also receive a key to the Spire of the Stars, which is your next destination in the Forbidden Knowledge questline.

The Spire of the Stars involves a symbol-positioning puzzle using Engraved Stones, and it's meaningfully more involved than anything in this quest.
