Crimson Desert Boss Guide: How to Beat Antumbra's Sword

Antumbra's Sword is one of the nastier optional bosses Crimson Desert throws at you, and the Sanctum of Absolution is not the place to show up underprepared. The reward for winning is genuinely worth the effort: the Vessel of Dark Pursuit two-handed sword can carry you through mid-game and beyond, but only if you understand what this boss is actually doing. Here's everything you need to beat it cleanly.

Where to find Antumbra's Sword

The Sanctum of Absolution sits in the southwest of the Hernand region, directly south of Scholastone Institute. There's an Abyss Nexus fast travel point nearby, so activate it on your way through to save yourself the walk on repeat attempts.

One thing worth knowing before you make the trip: you cannot solve any of the Sanctum's puzzles until you reach Chapter 5 and unlock Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom. The boss fight itself has no such restriction, but keep it in mind for the post-fight content. The courtyard will be crawling with Umbra's forces when you arrive. You can ignore every single one of them. Clearing the area does nothing to liberate the Sanctum. Only Antumbra's Sword going down counts.

How to prepare before the fight

Antumbra's Sword hits hard enough to end a run quickly if your gear is behind the curve. Spending 10 minutes on prep work here saves a lot of frustration.

  • Bring at least 3 Palmar Pills so you can continue the fight after getting knocked down without restarting from scratch.
  • Refine and upgrade all equipment (weapons and armor) to tier 3 or tier 4 before entering.
  • Invest Abyss Artifacts into the focus node on the skill tree to reach Focus level 3 — this is the single most important prep step for the main strategy.
  • Stock up on food for healing. Clear soup is a reliable, easy-to-obtain option.
  • Unlock Keen Senses Lv. 2 if you can. It slows time during dodges, which makes reading Antumbra's patterns significantly more forgiving.

What are Antumbra's Sword's key attack patterns?

Understanding the two main dangerous moves is what separates a clean win from a frustrating grind.

The Triple Illusion Strike is the move that will kill you if you're not expecting it. The apparitions can one-shot you if your health is already low. Perfect dodging all 3 is the correct call every time — do not try to tank even one of them.

How to beat Antumbra's Sword

The most reliable way to win this fight is built around Focus mode and Blinding Flash. Here's how it works in practice.

Enter Focus mode by pressing both sticks simultaneously on controller, or X on keyboard. Once you're in Focus mode, wait for Antumbra's Sword to come in with a normal melee swing. Hold LB/L1/CTRL and spam the block input as the attack lands to score a guaranteed parry. The parry staggers the boss, giving you a window to land a full combo before re-entering Focus mode and repeating.

Over time, landing parries fills the boss's poise bar. Once it maxes out, Antumbra's Sword becomes vulnerable for an extended period, which is your window to close out the fight with multiple consecutive combos.

For the Ground Thrust specifically, use Blinding Flash the instant Antumbra's Sword lifts the sword with both hands. For the triple Shadow Strike sequence, wait until after the third teleport attack lands, then fire off Blinding Flash to cancel the remainder of the combo.

After landing Blinding Flash, follow up immediately with a Blinding Flash Finisher to close the gap and chain directly into a high-damage combo. This is the fastest way to chunk the boss's health.

Whenever you get a parry opening outside of the Blinding Flash setup, use the Stab skill to apply bleed damage over time. It keeps pressure on the boss between your main offensive windows and adds up meaningfully over the course of the fight.

According to multiple sources covering the fight, the Focused Force Palm also works as a ranged damage option if you want to avoid staying in melee range during the boss's more aggressive phases. It won't replace the parry-and-combo loop for damage output, but it's a solid fallback when you need distance.

What do you get for defeating Antumbra's Sword?

The boss drops 2 rewards on defeat:

  • Abyss Artifact x1
  • Vessel of Dark Pursuit (two-handed sword)

The Vessel of Dark Pursuit is one of the stronger weapons available at this stage of the game. Keep refining it and it stays relevant well into late-game. The sword also comes with a special mapped attack called Wound of Darkness, which triggers on the Turning Slash input and replicates the vertical slash move Antumbra's Sword uses in the fight itself.

How to complete the Sanctum of Absolution puzzle

Once Antumbra's Sword is down, the Sanctum still needs its puzzle solved to be fully cleansed. Head up the stone staircase into the building across from the boss arena.

  • Destroy the pile of clay pots to reveal the first Fusion Reactor Core. Grab it with Axiom Force and seal it in your Kuku Pot.
  • Climb the platform ahead. The floor breaks, dropping you into the lower section. Watch for the fire trap immediately and go right. The second Reactor Core floats in this room — grab and seal it the same way.
  • Place the round pillar Reactor Core on top of one of the broken pillars. Climb on top of it and execute an Aerial Force Palm (jump and Force Palm simultaneously) to lock it in place.
  • Take out the cube-shaped Reactor Core and insert it into the square hole in the main machine. Use a Force Palm to seat it fully.

Completing the puzzle rewards you with blueprints for the Enhanced Kuku Pot and Kuku Spear.

How to unlock the treasure chest room

There's a locked room with a chest sitting just above the clay pot area. To open it, stand in front of the door and charge a Focused Force Palm, aiming at the square indent on the wall to flip it. Then move to the exterior of the Sanctum and find the flipped wall section, which now sits a few feet off the ground as a platform. Force Palm the second wall section from this platform to flip it again, which sends you inside the locked room. Open the chest for the Sunset Reed Cloth Boots, which come with a set of Abyss Gears you can use directly or extract for other equipment pieces. To exit, light the stone lantern inside the room to open the door bars.
