Ludvig is the Chapter 7 boss waiting for you inside Pailune Castle, and he's genuinely one of the hardest fights in Crimson Desert. He's fast, he hits hard with lightning, and he has two distinct phases that each demand a different approach. Going in underprepared means a quick death. Going in with the right skills and a full food inventory means a manageable, satisfying win.
What should you bring before fighting Ludvig?
Preparation separates a frustrating wipe from a clean kill. Stock up before entering the castle.
Essential items
- Palmar Pills — Save these for emergencies. Only pop one if you managed to get Ludvig low during his final phase before dying.
- Food with +100 HP healing — Chewy Rice Cakes (purchasable at Lonnie's shop in Greymane Camp), Steamed Eggs, and Hearty Grilled Meat all work. The shop stock refreshes daily, so if you've been taking the game slowly, you can build up 10+ of these before the fight.
- Dual-wielded one-handed weapons — Parrying works in a pinch, but the priority here is stacking damage and stun buildup fast. Two weapons means faster stagger accumulation.
- Lightning Resistance gear — Ludvig's attacks can inflict a roughly 4-second stun. Reaching Lightning Resistance Lv. 5 makes you immune to the buildup entirely. It's not mandatory to win, but it removes a lot of the frustration.
Start the fight using your weaker food items first. Save your best healing consumables for Awakened Ludvig's second phase, which hits significantly harder.

Blinding Flash Finisher setup
How to beat Ludvig (Phase 1)
Ludvig plays defensively. He waits for you to overcommit, then punishes it. The core loop is patience: hold back, let him attack, find your window, then unload.

Crimson Desert Boss Guide: How to Beat Ludvig
Phase 1 attack patterns and counters
The attack rotation to run with: Blinding Flash Finisher whenever Spirit is available, R2 Forward Slash to fill gaps, then step back and use Focus to recharge. Repeat. Ignore the throwable pillars in the arena — the wind-up time is too long and Ludvig will interrupt you every time.
Don't try to parry Ludvig unless he's going for his Blade Combo. Engaging him during his defensive stance means he can parry you instead.
How to cheese Ludvig
If you want an easier path through this fight, the arena layout gives you an option.
- From the main hall, exit through the east door.
- Ludvig will sometimes follow you outside but then retreat back into the arena. Use the wall near the closed door or the pillars as cover against his attacks.
- Once outside, deploy a Blinding Flash Finisher, then use Focus (L3+R3) to regenerate Spirit while waiting for him to come back out.
- Repeat until Phase 1 ends.
- In Phase 2, Ludvig is less likely to follow you outside. Instead, use the exterior as a recovery zone: regenerate Spirit with Focus, rush back inside for a Blinding Flash Finisher, then immediately retreat outside again.
How to beat Awakened Ludvig (Phase 2)
Awakened Ludvig is a different fight. He grows larger, teleports constantly, and adds new attacks that can end your run if you're not ready. Parrying is off the table here — the focus shifts entirely to evading and punishing.
Phase 2 attack patterns and counters
Use Focus frequently in Phase 2. It regenerates Spirit for another Blinding Flash Finisher and slows time enough to read where Ludvig is teleporting next. This is the most useful tool in this phase.
The attack chain Blinding Flash → Force Palm stuns Ludvig for extended periods in this phase, which is your main window for sustained damage. Forward Slash spam is riskier here given his erratic movement, so stick to the Focus + Blinding Flash combo as your primary offense.
What about the One-Armed Ludvig fight?
After defeating Awakened Ludvig, the game isn't done with you. A second encounter happens, this time playing as Oongka rather than Kliff. This is a jarring shift because Oongka starts with limited skill unlocks and you're handed a two-handed axe, which is slow and awkward against a boss this fast.
The fix: swap the axe for two one-handed swords and use Oongka's RB+RT attack to stun Ludvig repeatedly. Oongka also has a Rage ability accessible through Focus (hold both sticks) then RB, which triggers a damage burst that can chunk a big portion of Ludvig's health if timed during a stun window.
Ludvig fight rewards
After defeating Ludvig, you'll receive the Hungering Fang Leather Cloak and Hungering Fang Leather Boots. These are solid mid-game armor pieces worth equipping or selling depending on your current build.
