EA Sports FC 27 changed the finishing meta more than most players expected at launch. Finesse shots, the go-to technique from previous years, are far less reliable now. Keepers save them more often, the curve is reduced, and off-angle attempts that used to curl in routinely now sail wide. The good news is that two techniques have stepped up to replace them: low driven shots inside the box and power shots from distance. Get comfortable with both, and your goals-per-game rate will climb noticeably.

How do you perform a low driven shot in EA FC 27?

The input is a double-tap of the shoot button. Press B (Xbox) or Circle (PlayStation) to start charging your shot, then tap the same button again immediately after releasing it. The second press needs to come right after the first, not a second later. Timing is tight enough that the training arena is genuinely worth using to get the feel for it before taking it into Rivals or Champions.

The result is a fast, ground-hugging finish that gives goalkeepers very little time to react. Aimed at the bottom corners or near post, it is one of the most consistently effective finishes in the game right now.

Low driven finesse shots

Hold R1 (PlayStation) or RB (Xbox) while charging your shot, then tap the shoot button again to add curve to the finish. This variant is most useful when cutting into the box from a wide angle and targeting the far corner. The extra curl takes the ball slightly beyond the keeper's reach without sacrificing the low trajectory that makes the base version so effective.

Low driven power shots

Hold both L1 and R1 (or LB and RB) while charging, then tap the shoot button a second time once you have built up power. The animation slows briefly as your player winds up, similar to a standard power shot, but the ball stays low. This variant suits situations where you have a clean look at goal and want to combine maximum shot speed with a ground-level trajectory.

Where should you aim low driven shots?

Position matters as much as the input. Low driven shots are most effective from inside the penalty area, roughly 10 to 15 yards from goal. Charging too early gives the keeper time to set and react. Waiting too long risks the keeper rushing out to close you down before you can release.

The near-post finish deserves special attention here. Most players default to aiming across goal when they enter the box, but near-post low driven finishes are extremely difficult for keepers to stop in FC 27. Testing across multiple one-on-one situations shows a success rate of around 8 out of 10 when the angle and power are right.

Shot power should sit around 2 to 3 bars for most situations inside the box. Too little and the keeper saves it comfortably. Too much and the ball goes wide or over.

How do you make low driven shots more consistent?

The Low Driven PlayStyle is the single biggest upgrade you can add to an attacker for this technique. It provides improved shot accuracy, more consistent finishing, and faster shot execution on low driven attempts. For Ultimate Team players grinding challenges that require low driven goals, adding this PlayStyle to your striker or winger can be the difference between completing an objective in two or three games versus grinding through ten.

Raw shooting attributes still matter. FC 27 shifted the balance back toward base stats this year, meaning a PlayStyle badge alone will not paper over weak finishing numbers. Stack both where possible.

Power shots: when and how to use them

Outside the penalty area, power shots are the strongest option available. The input is L1 + R1 + Shoot (PlayStation) or LB + RB + Shoot (Xbox), with around 2 to 3 bars of power. The ideal position is roughly 5 to 10 metres outside the box, where you have enough space to wind up without a defender blocking the attempt.

The animation has a visible windup, which means defenders can block it if they are already closing you down. Only attempt power shots when you have clear space. If an opponent rushes out to press you, that is actually useful: fake the shot, let them commit, then play a pass into the space they just vacated.

Midfielders with the Power Shot+ PlayStyle get the most out of this technique. Two specific cards worth building around are Guarín and Valverde, both of whom naturally operate in the zones where power shots are most dangerous.

What happened to finesse shots?

EA reduced the curve, slowed the animation, and made finesse shot effectiveness scale much more heavily on the shooter's actual attributes rather than the PlayStyle badge alone. The result is that finesse shots are situational at best in FC 27. They can still work with a striker who has Finesse Shot+ and genuinely high shooting stats, and a clean open angle helps. Outside of that specific combination, low driven shots are the safer choice in almost every scenario.

The broader shift is that FC 27 rewards reading the situation and picking the right technique over defaulting to one move in every position. Analog sprint was also toned down this year, and manual defenders now mirror direction changes faster, which means getting into the right shooting position requires more deliberate buildup play rather than pace-abusing your way into the box.

For players who want to build squads and systems that create these opportunities consistently, our EA FC 27 guide collection covers formations, Ultimate Team modes, and progression systems in detail.

Building your squad around the shooting meta

For Ultimate Team, prioritising attackers with the Low Driven PlayStyle will pay off across the entire season, not just during specific challenges. Check the Division Rivals rewards breakdown to understand which ranks give you the best packs for upgrading your squad with meta-relevant cards.

If you are still getting familiar with the wider FC 27 systems, the Hall of FUT guide is worth reading for context on the new card rarity honoring legendary past players, some of whom have excellent shooting attributes for the low driven and power shot meta.

The core principle holds regardless of patches: pick the technique that fits the position you are in rather than defaulting to the same finish every time. Inside the box, go low driven and aim near post. Outside the box with space, wind up a power shot. Everything else is situational.
