Earth from Another Sun, this open-planet MMORPG game is being developed by Multiverse Inc, a team consisting of 40 people. Before creating EFAS, the company developed Reveries: Dream Flight and Seeking Dawn, two highly successful VR games that have earned them over 30 industry awards.
The lore revolves around a sci-fi world where humanity colonized the Kepler-452 system, and different factions were created which resulted in a huge amount of hatred, divide and conflict with each faction and wars began to break out.
The game is available through their own launcher with an access code and the minimum requirements for this game to run are Windows 10, a modern processor, 16GB of memory, a good graphics card, and 40GB of free space, necessitating a fairly new computer to ensure a smooth experience.
Gameplay
Earth From Another Sun combines first-person RPG and real-time strategy elements set in a sci-fi universe. Players start with a given character and explore an almost abandoned city where they fight enemies with their fleet. Experience points earned from successfully defeating enemies can be used to improve character attributes like dexterity, stamina and more. In addition to this, they can acquire new abilities to be used in combat.
Players will eventually control a customizable spaceship, navigating the galaxy with planets, space stations, and ruins. Players navigate to these terrains to complete battles which feature a range of enemies, finishing with a boss fight and chests that can be opened for extra buffs throughout the battle.
The game includes resource gathering, crafting, trading, and interactions with NPCs driven by the Ascendance AI system, which can affect gameplay and narrative. Players eventually command armies in both terrestrial and space-based battles, using various vehicles and mechs while engaging in first-person shooter combat. A cool feature here is the ability to play with friends through their Cooperative mode.
Progression in the game involves upgrading from a basic spaceship to larger models, expanding crew and interior facilities based on the resources gathered.
Review
Earth from Another Sun has created a nostalgic but modern game that Halo and Gears of War players alike are bound to enjoy. When looking at the graphics of this title, they have done well in designing the world with many different biomes. However, the graphics are not up to the standard you would expect from games that use Unreal Engine 5, as the current graphics are highly reminiscent of games from a previous generation. Â
In terms of audio design, there are fundamental flaws that reduce a player's experience, the main problem being the difference in sound levels between cutscenes and in-game speech. Aside from this, it is also hard to hear the SFX while playing the game through loudspeakers.
When it comes to the gameplay, the introduction loop is fairly straightforward. However, for those who have never played a game like this, it might be quite overwhelming. A player can skill up several different parts of their character and equipment, as well as their fleet that they use to attack different planets.
Overall, I would currently rate this game a 6/10. Earth from Another Sun has created a stable game that may be enjoyed by many. However, there are several downfalls, such as the sound design, as well as the direction for the player being lost quite early in the initial campaign when they begin their space side of the gameplay. With this being said, Earth from Another Sun has created a solid foundation that has the potential to reach the nostalgic itch that Halo players need.
