Fish - Fields of Mistria Guide - IGN

The Goby is one of those fish in Fields of Mistria that players spend way too long chasing because they're working off spawn tables from Early Access builds that no longer apply. Version 1.0.1 has a live fishing system with its own rules, and the fastest path to a Goby is understanding how that system actually works rather than trusting old community lists. Get the right rod, fish the right water type, and hook at the right moment.

What gear do you need before hunting Goby?

Before anything else, you need a fishing rod. The Worn Fishing Rod is available from Terithia's Tackle Shop on the Beach for 500 Tesserae. That starter rod is enough to begin your search, but there's a practical reason to upgrade.

Upgraded rods extend your casting range, which matters when fish shadows appear farther from shore or just beyond the starter rod's comfortable reach. The good news: rod upgrades don't consume your existing rod as a crafting material, so you can build toward better gear without losing what you already own.

tip
Even with the Worn Fishing Rod you can start testing water types for Goby right away. Upgrade when you find shadows consistently out of your casting range.

How do you fish correctly in Fields of Mistria?

The fishing mechanic has one rule that trips up almost every new player: do not click on nibbles. Here's the correct sequence.

  1. Equip your fishing rod from your inventory before approaching the water.
  2. Hold the charged-tool input to build up your cast and aim your throw.
  3. Release so the bobber lands close to a visible fish shadow in the water.
  4. Watch the bobber. The fish will bump it with nibble animations. Ignore them completely.
  5. Wait for the exclamation mark (!) to appear above the bobber, then click to hook.

warning
Clicking during a nibble animation instead of waiting for the ! will scare the fish away and waste the cast. Patience here is the actual skill.

Casting near a visible shadow rather than into empty water also makes a real difference. Blind casting into open water is slower and less reliable.

Where to find Goby: which water types to search?

Fields of Mistria categorizes fishing water into distinct types, and fish spawns are tied to those categories. Randomly hopping between scenic spots without tracking water type is the main reason players spend days without seeing a Goby.

The four water categories to work through are rivers, ponds, beach/ocean, and mines. Each one has its own spawn pool, so a fish that lives in rivers won't show up no matter how long you grind at the ocean.

These locations are category examples for building your search route, not confirmed fixed Goby spawn points. The goal is to spend a full in-game day on one water type at a time, keeping notes on the season, time of day, and weather during each session. When Goby finally appears, you'll know exactly which condition produced it.

important
Keep your water category tests completely separate. A river Goby search and a pond Goby search are two different experiments. Mixing them makes it impossible to identify what actually worked.

If you're working off any Goby data from Early Access version 0.16.x or earlier, treat it as a starting hypothesis rather than confirmed fact. Those spawn tables belong to a different build and may not reflect how 1.0.1 handles the fish.

What should you do with Goby once you catch it?

Your first Goby has one clear priority: check the Museum. If the donation icon shows the Museum still needs it, donate that first catch. Museum completion is fully available in 1.0.1, and fish donations contribute to that broader collection goal.

Once your Museum copy is handled, extra Goby sells through the Shipping Bin for Tesserae. Shipping fish also connects to the recipe-mail system, where sending new produce and fish can unlock recipes over time.

For cooking and gifting, check the recipe and NPC preference screens in your own save file. Goby-specific recipes and which characters appreciate it as a gift are tracked in those in-game screens, and those details are more reliable than any external list that may be out of date.

For more on building relationships with the town's residents while you farm, the Fields of Mistria marriage guide covers all 12 romance candidates and the full path from friendship to wedding. If you're thinking further ahead, there's also a guide on how to have children in Fields of Mistria for players working toward the Parent achievement. Both are part of the broader Fields of Mistria guide collection if you want to keep progressing across every system in the game.
