FFXIV Patch 7.4 Into the Mist Complete Content Guide.webp

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 7.4, titled Into the Mist, is one of the most content-packed updates the game has seen in recent memory. From the climactic conclusion of the Arcadion raid series to a sweeping glamour system rework and brand-new in-game tools for raiders, there is a lot to absorb. This guide breaks down every major addition and change so you can hit the ground running the moment you log in.

What's New in the Main Scenario?

Patch 7.4 advances the Dawntrail main scenario with a fresh batch of quests that serve as a bridge toward the next major adventure. The story centers on the fate of a mysterious "key" and what lies ahead for the Warrior of Light. The narrative is deliberately forward-looking, so expect foreshadowing rather than full resolution.

New Dungeon: Mistwake

Mistwake is the new story dungeon introduced alongside the main scenario quests. Its design theme is travel, mirroring the journey the Warrior of Light undertakes in the quests themselves. Expect varied environments and enemies that reflect the wandering spirit of the update's title.

What Is the Arcadion: Heavyweight Tier?

The Arcadion: Heavyweight Tier (also referred to as AAC Heavyweight M1 through M4, or M9–M12 in community shorthand) is the final chapter of the Arcadion raid series introduced in Dawntrail. Both Normal and Savage difficulties are available, with Savage releasing after the New Year's holiday period to ensure the development team can respond to any issues without service providers being on holiday break.

The tier pits you against the Arcadion's most powerful fighters, and the encounters are designed to highlight each opponent's personality and fighting style. The preview shown during the Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XC spotlighted AAC Heavyweight M2 specifically, giving players an early look at mechanics and gear rewards.

Tom Morello's "Everything Burns"

Perhaps the most unexpected highlight of the Heavyweight Tier is its soundtrack. Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine fame) composed an original track called "Everything Burns" specifically for this content. The connection came through Jason Charles Miller, vocalist on "Shadowbringers" and other FFXIV songs, who is board game friends with Morello. Upon learning that Sound Director Soken is a major Rage Against the Machine fan, Morello composed the track and reached out to the FFXIV team directly.

The track releases on streaming services on December 17, one day after the patch goes live, so you can experience it in-game first before it hits playlists.

Extreme Trial: Hell on Rails

Hell on Rails is Patch 7.4's new trial, available in both Normal and Extreme difficulty. The encounter involves a terrifying locomotive boss and features memory-test phases that will challenge first-time groups. The development team describes the fight as hectic on early attempts but manageable once you understand the patterns.

A notable reward change: Hell on Rails (Extreme) drops two tokens per clear, rather than the single token that previous Extreme trials awarded. The team acknowledged a large disparity between one-token and two-token rewards and decided to default to two tokens for this trial while a broader reevaluation of the token exchange rate continues.

How Does the Glamour Overhaul Work?

Glamour has long been called the "true endgame" of FFXIV, and Patch 7.4 delivers the most significant update to the system since it was introduced. The core change is that you can now freely apply glamour to gear regardless of class, job, or level. This removes one of the most persistent friction points in the system.

Additional glamour improvements include:

  • Outfit glamours can now store partial sets, meaning you no longer need every piece of an outfit to save it.
  • More gear sets have been added to outfit glamour support, which should free up slots in your glamour dresser.
  • The team acknowledged ongoing requests for more glamour dresser slots and glamour plates, and while those specific expansions are not in this patch, the outfit glamour additions are intended as a practical workaround.

What Is the Strategy Board Feature?

The Strategy Board is a brand-new in-game tool that lets you create, share, and display raid strategy diagrams directly within FFXIV. This is a direct response to years of players relying on external tools and image-sharing platforms to coordinate raid strategies.

How to Create and Share Diagrams

  • Start from a blank canvas or choose from premade templates featuring various arena shapes and role icons.
  • Place AoE markers, role icons, and other objects on the diagram. A layer system controls what displays on top.
  • Use multiple diagrams to illustrate a sequence of mechanics phase by phase.
  • DPS icon styles can be toggled between Japanese and English community conventions (e.g., D1 vs. Melee 1), and role icons can display specific jobs if your static has fixed assignments.
  • Highlight specific player icons to make tracking easier when learning a fight on a new role.

The screen share mode is particularly useful for pre-pull explanation sessions: only the host can make edits during screen share, but all party members see the diagram on their screens simultaneously.

What Is the Command Panel?

The Command Panel is a new UI element that functions as a customizable quick-access menu for actions. Key features include:

  • Lock specific actions in place or set the panel to auto-hide after use.
  • Keep the panel visible as an extra hotbar for persistent quick access.
  • On gamepad, the cursor moves one or two spaces at a time, meaning you can reach any icon on a tab from the center within two steps.

Full details on Command Panel settings and features are available in the official Patch 7.4 patch notes.

What Job Changes Are in Patch 7.4?

The patch notes and official job guide outline several targeted balance adjustments across multiple patches in the 7.4 cycle.

Patch 7.4 Core Changes

  • Physical Ranged DPS (Bard, Machinist, Dancer): Action potencies increased across the board. The reasoning is that while physical ranged jobs can attack while moving and have access to damage reduction tools, their raw offensive output had fallen behind magical ranged DPS jobs, which received potency increases in Patches 7.2 and 7.3.
  • Healers (White Mage, Scholar, Sage): Potencies increased to improve healer role balance. White Mage specifically gains full lily and blood lily stacks at the start of duties, improving opener flexibility. Plenary Indulgence now also applies a damage reduction effect, bringing it closer in utility to Astrologian's Collective Unconscious (whose damage reduction duration was adjusted to match).
  • Red Mage: Enchanted Riposte, Enchanted Zwerchhau, and Enchanted Redoublement can now be executed at range while under the effects of Manafication. Manafication's magical damage increase effect has been removed to reduce burst phase stress, with the potency of Vice of Thorns increased and Embolden enhanced to compensate.
  • Gunbreaker: Gnashing Fang is now a charged action to ease burst phase timing when mechanics force distance from the target. Bloodfest recast time shortened and now increases maximum cartridge count to prevent overflow. Double Down cartridge cost adjusted.
  • Dark Knight: Living Shadow duration extended to fix an issue where the simulacrum could not execute all available actions before retreating, depending on spawn location. Maximum action count for the simulacrum is unchanged.

Patch 7.41 and 7.45 Changes

  • Summoner (7.41): Potency of certain actions increased after the job was found to be relatively lacking in offensive output within the magical ranged DPS role following the 7.4 adjustments.
  • Reaper (7.45): Potencies of certain actions increased after the job's firepower was found to be somewhat lacking compared to other melee DPS jobs.

What Else Is Coming in Patch 7.4 and Beyond?

Tsukuyomi's Pain (Unreal)

Tsukuyomi returns from Stormblood as the latest Unreal trial. This is primarily a nostalgia and aesthetic experience, letting players revisit the encounter's atmospheric transitions with current-level scaling.

Occult Crescent and Phantom Jobs

The Occult Crescent content is expanding. Three new phantom jobs and beneficial accessories arrive in Patch 7.4 to help players prepare for the second installment of Forked Tower, which arrives in Patch 7.5 in both normal and harder versions.

PvP: Frontline Map and Feast Gear Replicas

  • Worqor Chirteh (Triumph) is the new Frontline map. It features dynamic weather that changes the battlefield, including snow phases where spirits build cover and grant buffs in light blue AoEs near triumph points, and aurora phases that rapidly charge the Limit Gauge. A key tactical note: having multiple players in the same circle does not speed up flag capture, so spread out across different circles to raise all flags simultaneously.
  • Feast ranking reward gear replicas are being added for the first time, responding to long-standing player requests. Both original and replica versions have two dye channels, but the dyeable sections differ between them to preserve the distinction for players who earned the originals.

New Variant Dungeon: The Merchant's Tale

The Merchant's Tale is a new variant dungeon for one to four players, arriving in Patch 7.41. The story follows a merchant into a world inside a book, and your choices influence how the narrative unfolds. An advanced version with powered-up bosses is also available.

A new variant action, Variant Eagle Eye Shot, is introduced as a powerful single-target attack for players confident in their progression. You can equip up to two variant actions at a time, so pairing it with Variant Rampart or Variant Cure is a solid approach when still learning the dungeon.

Other Notable Updates

  • Duty Support expanded to include Dzemael Darkhold and Aurum Vale, two dungeons notorious for tripping up newer players.
  • Deep Dungeon reconnect grace period added to help players recover from disconnects caused by DDoS attacks.
  • New UI color themes added.
  • Gold Saucer: Three new routes added to the Air Force One GATE in the Cieldalaes area, with slightly increased difficulty to keep scores meaningful.
  • Cosmic Exploration gains a new star, Oizys, arriving in Patch 7.41.
  • Phantom Weapons enhancement step coming in a later patch, with new visual effects.
  • Hildibrand Adventures continue in Patch 7.41.
